WHAT\’S UP AT THE PAULSBORO MARINE TERMINAL ?

—The taxpayer-funded Port of Paulsboro, which opened three years ago, is still only bringing in steel from Russia according to a recent report by

Taxpayers invested $225 million in the Gloucester County property which was touted as the first new marine terminal on the Delaware River in nearly 50 years when it opened in winter 2017. It was formerly a 190-acre petroleum storage field that had to be cleaned up and redeveloped.

(March 7, 2017)–The Delaware River has seen the opening of a first new marine terminal in 50 years with the inauguration of the Paulsboro facility in New Jersey. The $175m Paulsboro Marine Terminal was developed by the South Jersey Port Corp and is being operated by Holt Logistics Corp. Holt has committed more than $12m to the project in the form of cranes, rolling stock and other capital items. The brownfield site, covering 190 acres, used to be a BP tank farm. Located near Philadelphia International Airport, it has 21,000 feet of new rail track and an 850-foot wharf with two more berths planned. With the terminal initially employing 40-50 people, the potential for expansion could see that rise to 200, says the operator. It received its first vessel when bulker Doric Warrior delivered 55,000 tons of steel slabs from Tuapse in Russia for its first tenant, international steel company NLMK USA. “This has not yet been the big jobs producer, the big hope we all spoke about years ago,” he said. “I don’t know if there are more than 25 jobs right there right now. My big hope is that all that was talked about years ago come to fruition,\” said Mayor Gary Stevenson.

Officials say phase II of the Paulsboro development is underway and is expected to be completed in 2021. It includes two more wharves, infrastructure improvements and warehouses, which it doesn’t have now.

—Former Gloucester Catholic Hockey Coach Guy Gaudreau, who runs the Hollydell Ice Arena in Sewell,

explained how he still gives pointers to his elder son, \”Johnny Hockey,\” and his son\’s friend Buddy Robinson. Both his son and Robinson, who presently play for the Calvary Flames, also played for the Gloucester Catholic hockey team when they were students at the school.

The pair of Flames forwards (Gaudreau from Carneys Point and Robinson from Bellmawr) are the first two players from South Jersey to be teammates in the NHL. There are only 22 players who were born in New Jersey, according to hockey-reference.com, and went on to make it to the NHL. Nine remain active in the league as of this season.

Robinson, a 6-foot-6 right-wing, was playing for the Flames farm team when he got a call-up ahead of the Battle of Alberta with the Edmonton Oilers, Saturday night. Gaudreau and Robinson connected on a give-and-go play that resulted in the second career goal for Robinson, his first tally in the NHL since April 7, 2016.

NEW CAMDEN COUNTY FREEHOLDER

— Barbara Holcomb, was chosen recently to fill the vacant seat on the Camden County Freeholder Board that was held by Susan Shin Angulo, who resigned to become the new mayor of Cherry Hill.

Holcomb, the former deputy mayor of Winslow, is the vice-chair of the Camden County Democratic organization. She served one term on the Winslow school board before winning a township council seat and was presently serving on the Camden County Board of Taxation before accepting her new appointment.

Holcomb has not yet announced if she will run in a 2020 special election for the remaining 14 months of Shin Angulo’s term. William Tambussi, the counsel to the county Democrats, said that vote was only to fill the immediate vacancy and not to nominate Holcomb as the organization candidate for the June primary. Her ascension to the freeholder seat will create a vacancy on the Camden County Board of Taxation.

Camden County PD Sergeant Lydia Perez Retires After 25-Years-of-Service

CONGRATULATIONS–The Camden County Police Department held a special ceremony on January 31 to honor Sgt. Lydia Perez, who retired after 25 years of distinguished law enforcement service in Camden City.

Sgt. Perez was recognized by the Camden County Police Department in 2015 for her outstanding work. The following is from that proclamation.

She joined the former Camden Police Department in 1994. Four years later, she was assigned a critical role overseeing the department’s Uniform Crime Reporting. Sergeant Perez has served in that role since 1998 with the former city department and now with the Camden County Police Department.

Every week, Sergeant Perez reviews hundreds of police reports and must ensure that each crime that occurs is properly classified in accordance with the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting standards and that these numbers are reported accurately to the New Jersey State Police.

Despite handling a daily volume of reports that is exponentially higher than most other police departments, Sergeant Perez has been recognized by the State Police as being one of the best and most accurate UCR reporters in the entire state for more than a decade. She regularly achieves UCR accuracy rates of 98 percent and above. During the recent New Jersey State Police audit of Camden County Police Department UCR crime statistics, the department was found to have achieved a 100 percent accuracy mark in correctly classifying crimes for the first quarter of 2015.

“She really takes the time and dedication to do the job based on the FBI guidelines. With her accuracy, she’s one of the top UCR reporters in the state,” said Lieutenant Spencer Hildebrand of the New Jersey State Police.

“Sergeant Perez demonstrates her commitment every day through her hard work and the high standard she sets for UCR reporting. She is a tremendous asset to this department,” said Assistant Chief Orlando Cuevas.

Burlington County Authorities Ask Public to Help Find Sex Offender

Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina announced that law enforcement officials continue to seek the public’s assistance locating a 61-year-old man who failed to register as a sex offender as required under Megan’s Law.

William Dean is described as a white male, standing 6 feet tall and weighing approximately 220 pounds. He may be in the Camden area, and may be using the name Billy Dean.

State law requires registered sex offenders who plan to move to a new residence to notify police in the town where they presently live about the change, and also provide their new address to police in the municipality where they intend to move.

Dean is considered a fugitive. Anyone with information as to his whereabouts is urged to call the Prosecutor’s Office at

Thief Who Stole Pickups From Used Car Dealerships In Gloucester City Arrested: Admits Guilt

GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (January 22, 2020)–The thief that stole vehicles from C.W. Clarke Auto and Gormley\’s Auto in Gloucester City has been arrested according to

Agent Alex McVeigh spokesperson for the Camden County Prosecutors Office.

One of the thefts occurred January 2, 2020 after 7PM at CW Clarke\’s Auto, located on US Route 130 south near the Gloucester City/Brooklawn border and the other was a week or so before at Gormley\’s Auto, US Route 130 and Klemm Avenue, also in Gloucester City.

There was a Haddon Township gas station robbed at Route 130 and Nicholson Road shortly after the truck was stolen from Clarke\’s. Police have not confirmed a connection between the theft and the robbery according to

Fox29.

The suspect, Vincent Kerlin was arrested in Brooklawn on January 15, 2020.

Kerlin is scheduled to appear in Camden County Superior Court on Thursday, January 23.

The judge will determine whether Kerlin will be remanded to Camden County Jail pending further court proceedings

or whether he will be released to conditions.

Kerlin was released on his own recognizance as there is no monetary bail in the State of New Jersey as a result of the Criminal Justice Reform Act, which became effective January 1, 2017.

His detention hearing is scheduled for Thursday, January 23, 2020.

He was charged out of Gloucester City with one count of Burglary, one count of Theft by Unlawful Taking, and one count of Criminal Mischief.

According to the Complaint and Probable Cause statement the defendant confessed in a taped statement to stealing the vehicles from C.W. Clarke and Gormley\’s.

Grace Mary Schiavone (nee Sorace), born in Philadelphia, PA on August 24, 1929, passed away January 8, 2020. Currently an Aiken (South Carolina) resident and formerly of Bellmawr, NJ.

She was predeceased by Parents Isadore and Mary Sorace, Brothers Charles and Benjamin Sorace, Sister Frances Gagliardi, Husband and Father of her Children, Albert Charles Schiavo, second Husband Peter Schiavone and Son Albert Schiavo.

She is survived by her 6 Children – Daughter Janet DePrince (Frank), Son Robert Schiavo (Chris), Daughter Marie McFadden (Michael), Daughters Eleanor Togneri and Florence Schiavo, Son Anthony Schiavo, Grandsons Albert Schiavo and Evan Andrews, brother Salvatore Sorace, many Nieces and Nephews and Sister In Heart Gloria Spalinski.

As a young girl, Grace was a ballerina with LaScala Opera Company in Philadelphia for several years. She was their youngest dancer at that time.

Grace had a passion for life and her favorite hobbies were sewing, crocheting, creating beaded bracelets, cooking, baking and playing Bingo. She volunteered for the Aiken Chapter of The Lydia’s Project. She had special stories about her appear in the Aiken Standard and Bella Magazine for two businesses she started at ages 89 and 90 – “Tutu Cute Totes” and “Gracelets”.

A Celebration of Life will be held to honor Grace on Saturday, January 11 at George Funeral Home, 211 Park Avenue SW, Aiken. Visitation will begin at 10am and a service at 11am, followed by a luncheon at the same location. All are welcome to attend to celebrate the life of Grace!
