Commercial Vehicle Travel Restrictions on portions of I-78, I-80 and I-287 start at midnight tonight

Winter Weather Alert**

Avoid Unnecessary Travel during the Storm

(Trenton) –

New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti today issued a

commercial vehicle travel restriction on portions of I-78, I-80, and I-287 starting

at 12 midnight tonight

.

The winter storm is expected to produce difficult travel conditions across the northwest portion of the State due to accumulated snow and ice that will cause limited visibility on the roadways and disrupt snowplow operations, especially during the morning and evening commuting period on Monday, December 2.

NJDOT is prepared and coordinating our response with our regional transportation partners and the New Jersey State Police to ensure the safety of all travelers. Ice and winds could bring trees and branches down on roadways. NJDOT crews have tree-clearing equipment available to remove debris from state highways to ensure plows, emergency personnel and utility companies can get through.

Commercial Vehicle Travel Restriction

The restriction applies to the entire length of all Interstate Highways in New Jersey including:

Interstate 80, both directions from the Pennsylvania state line to exit 43 (I-287)

Interstate 78, both directions from the Pennsylvania state line to exit 29 (I-287)

Interstate 287, both directions from exit 21 (I-78) to the New York border

The commercial vehicle travel restriction in New Jersey applies to the following vehicles:

All tractor-trailers

Empty straight CDL-weighted trucks

Passenger vehicles pulling trailers

Recreational vehicles

Motorcycles

The restriction DOES NOT apply to:

New Jersey Turnpike

Garden State Parkway

Atlantic City Expressway

The Department is reminding motorists:

AVOID UNNECESSARY TRAVEL during the storm

Consider Telecommuting tomorrow, if possible

If you must drive and road conditions deteriorate, GET OFF THE ROAD somewhere safe and wait it out

Always STAY CLEAR of plows and spreading trucks.  If they are behind you,

let them pass

DO NOT PASS between trucks that are in a plow formation

Be patient and use caution

In order for NJDOT and our regional and local transportation partners to safely and efficiently clear roadways of snow and ice, motorists need to

Clear the Roads so We Can Clear the Roads.

NJDOT will deploy our Incline Package assets on I-280 and I-78 at Jugtown mountain (between Exits 7 and 11), which includes pre-positioning towing assets, NJDOT Safety Service Patrol (SSP) trucks, and coordination with New Jersey State Police.

NJDOT will be using Variable Message Signs throughout the storm to provide updates. Once conditions improve, NJDOT will lift the Winter Weather Congestion Alert.

Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT\’s traffic information website

Governor Murphy Urges Residents to Prepare for Two-Part Snow Storm

Wintry Mix of Rain and Snow Will Cause Hazardous Conditions Sunday and Monday

WOODBRIDGE (Dec. 1, 2019)–

– As winter weather moves into New Jersey Sunday and Monday, Governor Phil Murphy today encouraged residents to prepare for the winter storm and hazardous travel conditions. The Administration is continuously monitoring weather conditions as the holiday weekend ends and the work week begins. New Jerseyans are encouraged to prepare for messy road conditions Sunday and Monday and are strongly encouraged to use public

transportation if possible.

“New Jersey is expected to receive significant snow, sleet, and freezing rain that will create hazardous implications for our commuters and roadways,”

said Governor Murphy

. “My Administration is closely monitoring the snow storm and deploying all necessary resources to keep our residents safe. I urge everyone to travel with caution this holiday weekend and to always use their best judgment on the road.”

“New Jersey’s transportation agencies — the Department of Transportation, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, the South Jersey Transportation Authority, NJ TRANSIT and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey — are  coordinating our response and prepared for whatever weather comes,”

NJDOT Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti said

. “If you are traveling today, plan extra time, drive carefully, and move over to give our crews and emergency responders the room to do their jobs to keep the state’s highways clear and safe.”

“Troopers are ready to assist residents and motorists across the state both on and off of the highways throughout this busy travel weekend,”

said Colonel Patrick Callahan of the New Jersey State Police

. “We encourage everyone to prepare for winter weather. Please use caution when traveling and assemble an emergency kit for use at home and for your vehicle.”

“We are in communication with the utilities and they are prepared and ready in the event of outages,”

said Joseph L. Fiordaliso, President of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities

. “In anticipation of the coming weather and potential power outages, we recommend charging phones in advance and having contact information for your utility available. And, as always, never touch any downed power lines.”

“We ask our Interfaith partners to encourage their communities to make the necessary preparations and to check on neighbors throughout the storm,”

said Jared M. Maples, Director of the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness

. “Additionally, if you ‘See Something, Say Something.’  Please report any suspicious activity to our Counterterrorism Watch Desk by calling 1-866-4-SAFE-NJ (866-472-3365) or emailing

tips@njohsp.gov

.”

Important Tips to Remember When Preparing for Winter Weather:

Be prepared! Visit ready.nj.gov for information on how to prepare for: home, work, and your vehicle. Have an emergency kit/go-bag for all three locations.

Pets are family too! Remember to include them in your emergency plans. Visit animalemergency.nj.gov to find out more.

NEVER use a generator inside homes, garages, crawlspaces, sheds, or similar areas, even when using fans or opening doors and windows for ventilation. Deadly levels of carbon monoxide can quickly build up in these areas and can linger for hours, even after the generator has shut off.

Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are working before a storm.

Know how to report a power outage to your utility company.

Have cash on hand. If the power is out, so are the ATMs and credit card machines.

Charge your cell phones and try not to use them if the power goes out. Texting uses less power than a phone call, so send text messages to save power if possible.

Be sure to keep an adequate amount of gas in your car.

Be sure to check on friends and neighbors who have access or functional needs.

Need a warming center? Call NJ 2-1-1 or visit

www.nj211.org

to get connected!

Be sure to have extra medications on hand and keep them in a water-resistant container.

Get all of your vital records and insurance papers together now. Keep them in a water-resistant container. If you can, scan and email them to yourself so you have a copy of important numbers and policies.

Discuss business continuity plans now. Whether you are the boss or report to a boss, discuss your game plan for continued business operations.

Here are a few tips if you must drive during or after winter weather:

Check 511nj.org for traffic updates before you hit the road.

Be sure to have a full tank of gas before you start your trip.

Follow directions from local officials.

Take it slow!

Don’t crowd the plow! Give them plenty of room to work and never pass a snow plow on the right.

Keep a winter weather kit in your car, containing an ice scraper, blanket, flashlight with extra batteries, bag of kitty litter, shovel and charged cell phone, as well as reflective triangles or flares, cloth or paper towels and jumper cables.

Weather:

A mix of snow, sleet and rain will develop from south to north across the state this morning. Most areas will changeover to all rain later this morning and into this afternoon. But the higher elevations of Northwest will likely remain snow or a wintry mix. Any rain/mix will changeover to all snow Monday morning. Periods of snow will continue through the day Monday and will end Monday evening/night. Confidence on the changeover times and amounts is still low and snowfall amounts could change. Preliminary snowfall totals across the state: 6-8″ Northwest; 2-6″ Northeast; Up to 2”Central and Less than an inch South and none Coastal areas.

A Guide to Preparing Your Home for the Holidays

(Gloucestercitynews.net)(Nov. 29, 2019)–The festive season is rocketing into view and, as all grown-ups know at this time of year, that means more work, more guests, more mouths to feed and more joy and laughter to nurture. The festive period is full of fun for your close and extended family, and visiting friends, but it’s also a time during which your home will be sheltering more heads than usual – and as such, it’s an important time to be prepared for. In this handy guide, you’ll learn how to best prepare your home for the holiday season in order to make your Christmas as wonderful and carefree as possible.

Seating Arrangements

Your first task is undoubtedly simply to understand how so many more people arriving in your home will find places to sit, talk, socialize, make merry, and – most importantly – eat. If you’re unable to find enough chairs for all the guests you’re expecting, you may wish to hire some more from a local furniture warehouse, or else buy some second-hand from local furniture stores. Meanwhile, make sure you know how to cater to everyone who visits. You may wish to invest in some

elegant furniture

for your new arrivals – in order to provide seats, beds, couches and tables for everyone who’ll be attending your home this Christmas.

Cleaning and Tidying

With a host of guests due to arrive in your home, there is the usual cleaning and tidying to undertake in order for you to present the home interior that you want to promote to your friends, family, and guests. Go around your home

fastidiously to clean each and every corner

– and be especially careful to hide or secure some of your more precious belongings: Christmas is a time of indulgence, and those who’ve had a little too much cherry may find themselves breaking items that you’ve left out.

The Kitchen

Hands-down the most important room in the house during the festive period, the kitchen will require some work before your guests begin to arrive. You need to make sure that everything’s clean, and that you have enough plates, knives, forks and cooking accessories for some of the feasts you have planned. It goes without saying that you should also check the food in your fridge, and stock up on meat, dairy and beverages to keep you ravenous and excited guests happy throughout the duration of their stay.

Festive Touches

With all the preparation out of the way in terms of seating, sleeping and cleaning, it’s time to add the flourishes that can make your home sparkle and gleam with the

red-and-green festive feel of Christmas

. Whether that means hanging stockings and mistletoe, heaving a Christmas tree into the main room, or adding little cutlets of ivy and holly to your mantelpiece, this is the final stage to decorating your home in the anticipation of a festive frolic with all your closest loved ones this festive period. Decorate in order to luxuriate in a truly Christmas-themed interior this holiday season.

Prepare your home for the festive season with the four tips outlined above – guaranteeing all of your guests a merry, wonderful time!

How to Plan the Ultimate Solo Vacation

(Gloucestercitynews.net)(Nov. 28, 2019)–Sometimes life just gets to us, and that’s alright. Needing an escape is not a problem; it’s just a chance to treat yourself to a new routine. It’s healthy, it’s fun, and no, you don’t need to try to organize a trip with friends. If you find it’s difficult to get everyone to agree on dates, on destinations, on what to do or where to go – then go without them. Solo travel is very invigorating when you’re stressed, and can help you have the perfect trip that you’ve always wanted.

To ensure you get a full, rounded, enriching vacation, however, you’re going to want to follow these tips:

Choose a Destination with the Right Weather

There is always going to be great weather somewhere. If the temperature matters to you, then the temperature is going to dictate when and where you can go. If you need a sunny escape during winter, then heading south to

great destinations like Australia

is definitely the way to go. By choosing the weather first, you won’t be disappointed and instead can soak in the sun.

Read Local Guides Before You Go

The best way to learn about what there is to do is to read local guides written by local people. Try to stay away from big corporate travel sites, as their recommendations are going to be skewered. If you want a real, authentic, quality experience, then going where the locals go is your best bet. You can do this for nights out, for food and drink, and even for finding some hidden treasures in your destination that don’t get featured a million times on Instagram.

Be Aware of What is Available in Your Destination

Travel out of state, and the rules will be different. Travel out of the country, however, and you can enjoy a wholly unique experience that is simply not afforded to you back home. Head over to Australia for vacation, for example, and you’d be surprised to learn that brothels like Brisbane’s

cleosonnile.com.au

are exhilarating, legal, and safe. This keeps the experience safe and pleasurable for everyone.

Each country has its own set of rules, and knowing what you can (and cannot) do on vacation is a good way to make the most out of your trip and to ensure you don’t accidentally get in trouble.

Find Events and Book Tickets

Always check to see what events will be going on when you are in town. A great concert, a festival, your favorite comedian – there are so many opportunities at any given time. Going to an event will make your trip more unique and special.

Keep Your Trip Simple

Overdoing your itinerary

is going to be the death of you. Yes, you’ll be fully in charge of what you do, where you go, and what you see, but you don’t want to rush from place to place. You need to take some time to enjoy yourself and soak in the experience and quiet your mind. Regardless of how fun and exciting your trip is, taking some moments to be still will help you relax and rejuvenate so that you can return home well-rested in the mind and spirit.

5 Things That Could Go Wrong During Your Next Trip to Vegas

(Gloucestercitynews.net)(Nov. 28, 2019)–It is not called Sin City for nothing. Las Vegas is a great place to go to for fun, gambling, entertainment and yes, some good, old fashioned debauchery. While the thrill-seekers paradise in the desert has become a lot more family-friendly over the last few decades, there is still plenty that can go wrong during a trip to Vegas. While the worst-case over-the-top scenario looks something like the movie

The Hangover

, there are plenty of other, more realistic things that can ruin your next Vegas vacation. Here are 5 things that could go wrong during your next trip to Vegas.

Get banned from a casino

Nothing will sour your trip to Sin City like getting tossed out of and banned from the casino. Aside from trying to cheat to win money (which we will discuss later), there are a few guaranteed ways to be asked to leave not so nicely by very large security guards.

Gambling News Magazine

has a pretty comprehensive list of the faux pas that will earn you a swift exit. These things include the number one reason, getting too intoxicated, as well as things like acting inappropriately at the tables, forgetting casino etiquette, or taking pictures on the casino floor.

Get caught cheating

There are a lot of ways to win in Vegas which also means there are a lot of ways to try to cheat to win. Getting caught by casino security or the “eye in the sky” trying to scam the casino is a surefire recipe to be ejected from the casino and not allowed back in here is what the casinos are looking for in the different table games to find cheaters.

Blackjack

– Card counting is the biggest way of cheating in blackjack. This is when players keep a running tally of what cards have come out and what cards have not. When the odds are against the player they bet less and when they are in their favor, they bet more. While not technically illegal, if you are accused of this you will get kicked out of the casino. The most famous example of card counting the

MIT Blackjack Team

in the mid-1990s who took the casinos for millions and inspired the book and movie, Bringing Down the House.

Roulette

In roulette, there are multiple ways to cheat and win big. All of which will get you a swift exit from the casino.

Gambler Daily Digest

lays out all the ways you can chest the spinning wheel. This includes everything from working with another player to using technology and modifying the wheel itself. There are even more technical ways included such as past posting and sector targeting.

Poker

– There are also multiple ways to cheat in poker including working with another player and the use of technology. While not in Vegas, there is currently a

major scandal

going on in the poker world that includes allegations of cheating by a player who plays in televised games in a casino in California.

Losing money

Everyone goes to Vegas in the hopes of winning big but, unfortunately, many players walk away with their wallets much lighter than when they started. One of the games people lose at the most is the slots. While it may feel like you are not losing big because you are only playing small bets, these can add up. While lots of people love the one-armed bandits, they can also be a money drench. If you want to play the slots anyway, you really need to learn how to give your chance the best odds to win.

Weekly Slots News

has a great guide on how to get better at slots and have a much better chance of winning that jackpot.

Getting married

Tons of people go to Las Vegas to get married every year. In fact, there are over 120,000 marriages performed in the city annually which translates to around 10,000 per month. While many people come to the desert specifically for this purpose, there are some who have no intention to do so but end up with a husband or wife anyways. Steve Lewis from

Online Casino Gems

says, “I have seen a lot of quickie weddings over the years. Everything from couples who have been engaged forever deciding spur of the moment to hit the chapel to couples who literally just met that night. It is one of the things you will ONLY see in Las Vegas.”

Being burned by the elements

If you were not already aware, Las Vegas is right in the middle of the Mojave Desert. It is one of the things that makes the city so unique but also what can make outdoor conditions very dangerous. Inside all the hotels and casinos, you will find a perfectly air-conditioned atmosphere. However, when you venture outside, there could be potentially dangerous conditions to deal with. A desert climate is known for very hot days and cold nights. Depending on the season, temperatures during the day can soar into the 100s. At night, they can drop to near freezing at times.

Make sure you are prepared for whatever the elements will bring if you decide to venture out of the temperature-controlled casinos. If you are lounging by the pool or going on a day hike, you will need to wear plenty of sunscreen to protect you from burns. Nothing can ruin a Vegas trip faster than second-degree sunburn. If you are going out to explore the natural surroundings and will be out past sundown, make sure you have warm clothing available to put on.

Conclusion

Yes, there is a lot that can go wrong during your next Vegas trip but do not let that scare you away. For most, Las Vegas is an amazing time with unforgettable experiences that will last a lifetime. If you follow the rules, don’t try to cheat, respect the desert, set yourself a budget and stay away from unplanned wedding ceremonies, you will have an amazing time that will keep you coming back to Vegas again and again.

Impaired Driving Enforcement Crackdown to be Conducted Locally as Part of Statewide Year End Campaign

Lower Township — Law enforcement officials from the Lower Township Police Department will be cracking down on drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs as part of the annual end of year “

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”

statewide campaign.  Beginning December 6, 2019 and continuing through January 1, 2020, local and state law enforcement officials will conduct saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints looking for motorists who may be driving while intoxicated.

The national

“Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”

effort endeavors to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving through a combination of high-visibility enforcement and public education. “During the last five years New Jersey has experienced nearly 37,000 alcohol involved crashes resulting in more than 679 fatalities,\” said Chief William Mastriana.  “This is a critical law enforcement program that can save lives during a time of the year when social gatherings with alcohol increase the risk of impaired driving.”

Last year, 20% of all motor vehicle fatalities in New Jersey were alcohol-related. Nationally, 10,511 people died in 2018 in drunk driving crashes. The societal cost associated with these crashes is estimated to be $44 billion annually.

Law enforcement agencies participating in the

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over

2019 Year End Holiday Crackdown

offer the following advice for the holiday season:

Take mass transit, a taxicab, or ask a sober friend to drive you home.

Spend the night where the activity or party is held.

If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement. Your actions may save someone’s life, and inaction could cost a life.

Always buckle-up, every ride.  It is your best defense against an impaired driver.

If you are intoxicated and traveling on foot, the safest way to get home is to take a cab, have a sober friend or family member drive, or escort you to your doorstep.

Be responsible. If someone you know is drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel.

European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)

(Gloucestercitynews.net)(Nov. 27, 2019)–With the expansion and debatable success of the European Union, the supranational state has become evident that it’s possible to successfully coordinate policies across multiple jurisdictions. Trade wars and tax competition has always eroded the notion of collective behavior, but the E.U. proves this is not the case. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), though not strictly the E.U., is evidence that coordinated policy can work too.

On September 5th, 2018, The European Council passed a regulation that would better control European borders. This system was designed to mitigate security threats to European countries by making sure Europe as a collective can identify who, when visiting or moving, may pose as a security threat. If this is the case, they can deny such people the authorization to travel.

So, what does this mean for visitors?

The systems mean that all visa-exempt countries are required to go through ETIAS –

https://www.etias.info/

. For a small fee, you can apply online, meaning the application is processed quickly. This isn’t exactly like a visa, it’s separate – as well as being faster and cheaper. In fact, it\’s a visa waiver program. In this sense, the E.U. is being generous here, maintaining an accessible system as well as high-level security.

Who needs an ETIAS visa waiver?

All in all, there are 60 nationalities that need an ETIAS visa waiver. That’s good news, as 60 countries need not apply for a visa. For a quick example, 7 of these origin countries include:

Australia

Hong Kong

USA

Canada

Argentina

Singapore

UAB

The link above shares the remaining 53 origin countries. So, if you’re from one of those and are looking to visit a European ETIAS country, then your life just got easier with a 5-minute application. It’s important to note that not every country in Europe or the E.U. uses ETIAS. For example, Monaco, Sweden, and Vatican City all use ETIAS, along with most European Union States, but not the UK.

It is known as the Schengen Area – the area in which 26 countries are a part of the ETIAS program. This is 22 out of the 24 EU countries, along with the inclusion of four non-EU countries. The Schengen Agreement was signed over 30 years ago in 1985 (at that point it was just 10 countries).

The entire process is designed to be hassle-free, with no necessity to go to a consulate or embassy. You can visit 400 million KM^2 with very little friction. Of course, you will need a valid passport – ideally with at least 6 months left on it. These details will be required to fulfill the ETIAS application.

Europe is a hugely popular holiday destination, with an extremely rich history and interesting economic developments. Not only is a great holiday, but a great blueprint of how to work in unison towards common goals, such as national security, green energy and taxation. Now it’s not just EU citizens that get to freely move about without a visa, but much of the rest of the world too. It’s important to keep an eye on the eligible origin countries for the ETIAS, as the list will continue to grow.

PATCO RECEIVES CEREMONIAL LIBERTY BELL

IN RECOGNITION OF 50 YEARS OF PUBLIC TRANSIT SERVICE

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney commemorated PATCO’s Golden Anniversary during Customer Appreciation Event at 15/16th & Locust Street Station

To commemorate PATCO’s 50 years of connecting people through public transit, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney presented PATCO with a Ceremonial Liberty Bell on behalf of the City of Philadelphia last month.

On February 15, 1969, PATCO made its first trip from Lindenwold, New Jersey, to Center City Philadelphia.

“Congratulations to PATCO on its 50th Anniversary. It’s a real connection between Philadelphia and New Jersey,” said Kenney. “PATCO is really important. It brings thousands of passengers across the bridge into Philadelphia. It keeps cars off the highways, keeps emissions down and really does a good job for our environment.”

PATCO General Manager John D. Rink and DRPA Deputy CEO Maria J. Wing accepted the Ceremonial Liberty Bell on behalf of PATCO at its 15/16th & Locust Street Station.

“We have a saying at the DRPA and PATCO that we connect people. We connect people to their jobs. We connect people to their homes. We connect people to cross river events,” said Wing. “Currently more than 10.8 million people every year ride PATCO. We look forward to another 50 years of serving the region with the reopening of the Franklin Square Station in 2023.”

Kenney echoed the shared excitement for the reopening of Franklin Square.

“The opening of the PATCO Station at Franklin Square will be wonderful because people from New Jersey will be able to bring their kids over to Franklin Square and not have to bring their car and have a good time with their kids and enjoy Philadelphia,” added Kenney. “It makes us even closer states than we already are.”

After the Liberty Bell presentation, PATCO held a 50th Anniversary Customer Appreciation Event at the station. The event featured food, music, giveaways and a prize wheel where customers could win items such as a $50 FREEDOM Card and round-trip tickets.

“We are very proud to be part of the Philadelphia community,” said Rink. “Without our customers each and every day, we would not be here, so thank you.”

Basic Information About Insurance in the USA Everyone Needs To Know

(Gloucestercitynews.net)(Nov. 26, 2019)–Whether you are a citizen or not, you may know that insurance in the USA is something that everyone is talking about and many own. Besides, there are also many online dealers that offer you financial security for the fairest price. Despite the number of vendors, some of them may be a little less reliable than the others. That is why we offer you pay attention to the

www.americaninsurance.com

website in the first place. The company has the most reliable and acceptable offers on the market.

Insurance – what is it?

However, just before you just to the website, you need to be aware of what you are signing up for, and we are going to start with the basics. The truth is that very often things happen to us when we least expect them. To cover unexpected losses, you may need to have a pretty penny in your pocket. That is when the insurance comes in so handy. No matter the type of insurance you choose, each will help you reduce the financial loss. Think of insurance as of a certain contract between you and insuring company. The company is the one who is going to cover a part of your losses in case anything happens to you. Of course, the contract isn’t free to sign. When you choose a deal you see the fittest, you are supposed to pay your premium. Those premiums are usually paid periodically. The periods and other details depend upon the type of insurance that you choose as well as the policy the provider offers.

How does it work?

When you sign a contract with an insurance provider, you become one of many other people who have done the same. In case the loss occurs to you, you need to provide the insurance company with the proofs that support your claim. Besides, you need to read the contract clearly before you sign it, in case of some loopholes. The truth is that in many cases the insurance is active for a limited time if you miss it, there will be no financial aid from the provider, and there is rarely a chance that you will be able to stand your ground and prove against what you have signed up for.

Types of insurance

There is no one-for-all insurance. There are a few different types of it so that you can choose the one or few that suit you best and those you consider most likely to be needed.

Life insurance – the insurance provider, issues the payment to the family in case of the insured’s death.

Health insurance – in case of certain health problems, the insurance provider will help the insured person cover the payment for the services.

General Insurance – if anything to your insured belongings, such as your house or anything of the kind, happens, the insurance company will pay for it.

Group insurance – this is usually the insurance applied to employees of various companies or work organizations when the employer covers the losses of any employ according to the insurance policy.

SJTA Expands the Scope and Reach of Its Environmental Initiative

Partners with NJ Fish & Wildlife to present Northeastern Transportation and Wildlife Conference in Atlantic City

An osprey builds up a nest on a platform installed by the SJTA in recent years as part of its READI program. (SJTA photo/Darleen Adamo)

HAMMONTON, NJ – Nov.25, 2019 – As it marks over two years since it started its Roadway Environmental Advancement Initiative (READI), the

South Jersey Transportation Authority

is proud to announce New Jersey Fish & Wildlife Services is joining with the Authority in co-hosting the

Northeastern Transportation and Wildlife Conference

in September 2020.

With its theme of \”2020 Vision – Creating a Roadmap to Help Wildlife Navigate our Mobile World,\” the biannual conference is slated to meet in Atlantic City at the Sheraton Hotel, September 20 – 23, 2020, and is inviting a wide array of transportation and ecology professionals, researchers, academics, students and consultants.

The

conference

will explore how industry leaders, ecologists, transportation planners, as well as state and municipal officials can work together to ensure wildlife mobility across the Northeast\’s fragmented and changing landscape. More conference information is available at

https://www.netwc.org/

.

The SJTA launched READI several years ago when the Atlantic City Expressway Operations Department began reintroducing native, perennial wildflowers across 35 acres of the Expressway\’s right-of-way. The wildflowers attract and support important pollinators like bees and butterflies that are suffering from habitat loss and pesticide use. The goal is to reverse the population decline of these crucial pollinators

.

The initiative evolved when the Expressway installed a series of bat boxes or bat houses along the highway\’s right-of-way in 2017. While bats play a vital role in the ecology of local environments, they face numerous threats including a disease called White Nose Bat Syndrome and the loss of habitat. The bat houses provide shelter and safety from predators.

The efforts of READI go beyond only supporting bats; it has installed structures for a variety of species including the American Kestrel, blue birds, screech owls and nesting platforms for ospreys near Atlantic City. The program has created animal crossings that allow wildlife to travel underneath the Expressway as they naturally migrate between different areas.

READI also has an educational component that involves presenting programs at local schools to support their environmental curriculums. Every year around Arbor Day, the Operations Department is invited to local elementary and middle schools to plant a tree(s) and present assemblies that impress on students the importance of practicing good environmental stewardship. The SJTA has visited more than 26 schools since 2011 and planted as many as 35 trees in a variety of species during the past four years. These programs invite student participation in the planting of a native tree(s) at each school visited.

The Northeast Transportation and Wildlife Conference will enable READI to expand its educational focus and engage professionals from nine states interested in helping transportation and wildlife to coexist and share space in our region of the country.

\”The SJTA\’s co-hosting of this important conference is a natural outgrowth of our efforts to help the environment while operating the Expressway, the Atlantic City International Airport and other South Jersey infrastructure assets that play an important role in supporting commerce, tourism and economic growth across South Jersey and beyond,\” said SJTA\’s Executive Director Stephen F. Dougherty. \”We are proud to join the New Jersey Fish & Wildlife Services in offering this conference.\”
