NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Joseph J. Roberts Jr., retired speaker of the state General Assembly, was inducted as a public member of the Board of Governors of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, at today’s board meeting.

Roberts, from Camden, was nominated by former Gov. Jon S. Corzine in January and confirmed by the state Senate. His term will expire in 2012. The Board of Governors, Rutgers’ highest governing body, has 11 members.

A Democrat, Roberts won a special election to the Assembly in 1987 to complete the unexpired term of the late Francis J. Gorman. He was re-elected 11 times and was majority leader from 2002 to 2006, when he became speaker until his retirement in January after a 22-year legislative career.

As the Assembly’s presiding officer, Roberts led efforts for an unprecedented special legislative session to confront the issues of rising property taxes. He authored the CORE Reform law that promotes the sharing and consolidation of services among municipalities and school districts. He also wrote a law overhauling New Jersey’s affordable housing landscape to help low- and middle-income working families to purchase homes. The law eliminated a practice that allowed suburban towns to forgo their affordable housing obligations.

First I want to commend the City Employees and the citizenry for their efforts and patience during the recent historical snowfalls. I think the job of snow removal and displacement was excellent in comparison to the surrounding communities that I was forced to venture into during the storm. Our guys worked long and hard hours through the night to make the streets as safe as possible and their efforts did not go unnoticed.

Edith J. Levengood, Edith J. (nee Thompson), 76, of West Deptford on February 17, 2010. Born in Gloucester City on Nov. 22, 1933.

Edith was a generous and selfless woman who put her family before everything else, including herself. After her husband passed away in 1969, Edie moved from Cherry Hill to West Deptford to raise her three young children. She also raised her granddaughter and cared for her aging mother. To provide for her family, Edie worked two jobs – at Macys and AMC movie theater in Deptford. Besides her family, one of Edie\’s greatest joys was to share the many wonderful memories of her childhood and her life with her husband. Her courage and smile remained with her until the very end.

Edith is the loving mother of James (Billie-Jo), Linda, and the late Jon Levengood; adoring Mom-Mom of Stephanie, Jon, Tyler, and Tiffany; beloved great grandmother of Damian; dear friend of Doris Lowe; beloved sister of Marge Tieers of Gloucester City and the late Doris Vogel, Elaine Scheule and Barbara Thomas. Also survived by many nieces and nephews whom she adored. Edith was predeceased by her husband James.

Gloucester City Is 27th Municipality to Partner with Agencies on Program

GLOUCESTER CITY, N.J. (February 19, 2010)– Gloucester City Mayor William James today joined representatives of the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (HMFA) at the Community Center, 230 Nicholson Road, to announce that the City is the newest member of the Live Where You Work program. Gloucester City is the 27th municipality to partner with the HMFA on this workforce housing initiative.

It\’s true. Approval of fishing is highest at 87% followed by hunting at 66% and then trapping at 45%. This is great news for environmental stewardship and conservation. It is especially encouraging since not all New Jerseyans participate in these activities… but, impressively, support them!

Who says? Well, I am sure New Jersey\’s 650,000 to 800,000 anglers, hunters and trappers would be boastful, but we admit to our bias. So, we will instead rely on the findings of the research firm Responsive Management. \”Responsive Management is an internationally recognized public opinion and attitude survey research firm specializing in natural resource and outdoor recreation issues. Their mission is to help natural resource and outdoor recreation agencies and organizations better understand and work with their constituents, customers, and the public.\”

According to their website, \”Responsive Management has conducted more studies on more hunting-related issues in more geographic locations than any other organization in the world.\” This firm also has \”extensive experience in the use of quantitative and qualitative research on fishing and fisheries management issues and has conducted more studies on different fishing topics in more geographic areas than any other organization.\”

Noncompliance Finding Forwarded to the Secretaries of Commerce and the Interior

Last week at its Winter Meeting, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission found the State of New Jersey out of compliance with the mandatory management measures contained in the Interstate Fishery Management Plan (FMP) for Atlantic Coastal Sharks. The Commission has notified the Secretaries of Commerce and the Interior of its finding. This action was taken pursuant to the provisions of the Atlantic Coastal Fisheries Cooperative Management Act of 1993.

The State of New Jersey has not implemented the regulations of the Interstate FMP for Atlantic Coastal Sharks. The implementation of these regulations is necessary to rebuild depleted shark stocks, ensure sustainable harvest of others, and provide protection for sharks in state nursing and pupping grounds. The Technical Committee has identified Delaware Bay as one of the most important nursing grounds for depleted
sandbar sharks on the Atlantic Coast. Included in the 22 commercial and recreational regulations in the FMP is a seasonal closure from Virginia north through New Jersey to protect pupping sandbar sharks.

In order to come back into compliance the State of New Jersey must implement all measures contained in the FMP. Upon notification by the Commission, the Secretary of Commerce has 30 days to review the recommendation and determine appropriate action, which may include a federal moratorium on fishing for all 40 species of coastal sharks managed under the FMP in New Jersey\’s state waters.

In response to Dawn Watson, of \”Brother of the Wolf Wonders\”..who suggested a fund raiser for band jackets

I have been the director of the Gloucester City Jr Sr HS Lions Band for twenty four of the last twenty nine years. The band, as a whole, has always been well funded and supported by the Gloucester City Board of Education and the school administration. Budgets are planned at least one year in advance and executed throughout the school year.

 As the band director for the Gloucester City Jr Sr HS Lions Band, the need for band jackets has never been an issue. Band jackets – at least during my tenure – have always been purchased by the students for their use. Jackets purchased by the school are technically the property of the school and should not be used outside of school or school functions.

It has been tradition for teams who have won a division, section or state title to receive jackets. Team championship jackets are also purchased in part by students with additional monies raised by parents. The band, unfortunately, has not been in the position of winning championships for many years.

For the last few seasons, the band has been going through some growing pains and our numbers are not what they were a decade ago. We are working hard to build those numbers. The students in every area of the band – marching band,concert band, jazz band, percussion ensemble and indoor color guard – work diligently and are justly proud of their achievements. While we appreciate the thought, raising money on behalf of our organization without our knowledge in inappropriate at this time.
