Baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra played American Legion baseball in St. Louis.

During World War II, many ballplayers fulfilled their service obligations by taking cushy assignments overseas. Yogi Berra wasn\’t among them; the legendary Hall of Famer served as a gunner\’s mate at the D-Day invasion. Six decades later, the U.S. Navy Memorial is honoring him with the Lone Sailor Award, given annually to former sailors who have used service-learned skills to further their careers and lives.

Berra\’s illustrious baseball career began in St. Louis, where he played American Legion Baseball for Fred W. Stockholm Post 245. He became an all-time great after an 18-year career in New York. But before he was the legendary Yankees catcher and notorious manipulator of the English language, he served aboard an Allied missile boat during the invasion of Normandy in 1944.

Over 60 years later, Berra is being honored for exemplifying the Navy\’s core values.

\”Our honorees are living examples of how service to country changes lives and helps develop leaders,\” Edward Walker Jr., president and Navy Memorial CEO and president, said.

Born in an Italian neighborhood in St. Louis, Berra played for St. Mary\’s High School and in various Legion Baseball leagues. He was once quoted as saying his time as a Legion ballplayer was the best experience he ever had.

The team I managed was fortunate enough to win the 13-15 year old division. I would like to publicly thank some special people who helped make it happen.

The Medford Mustangs celebrate after beating Lakeside Recovery 14-0 to clinch an American Legion Baseball regional championship. The Mustangs, sponsored by Post 15, move on to the Legion World Series in Fargo, N.D.

Eight regional champions are heading to Fargo, N.D. for the American Legion Baseball World Series Aug. 14-18. Video replays, used at the Little League Baseball World Series in 2008 for the first time by any baseball organization, will be expanded at this year’s Series, it was announced today. The 63rd annual tournament for 11-12-year-olds is scheduled for Aug. 21-30, the culmination of more than 16,000 games played worldwide to determine the World Champion.

Last year, video replay was limited to the case of a batted ball that left the field of play at or near the outfield fence, or should have been ruled out of the field of play at or near the outfield fence. Some examples of these types of batted balls are a home run, a double by rule, a ball that goes under the home run fence, and fan interference at the home run fence. The system was used twice in 32 games, and in neither case was the call on the field reversed.

Firefighter Paul Warhola of Engine 221 in Brooklyn became ill while responding to a blaze at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 12.

He was transported to Bellevue Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead after his condition worsened, the newspaper said.

Can you imagine having this job? Just what I want to do on a hot humid day in the summer, look through a trash bag with the flies, maggots and the smell of rotten garbage for a few cans or bottles that should be recycle.

This greater mission of these organizations is not based on the precepts of conservation but changing the law to provide constitutional rights to all animals. In fact, many of the people in the animal extremist movement are members of different front groups with initiatives that deflect attention from their advancement of a greater cause – the advancement of a vegan/vegetarian lifestyle for all people.
