Bellmawr\’s Christmas in The Park a Huge Success

After spending weeks getting ready for the event, Santa’s elves, disguised as Borough employees, made last-minute preparations for Bellmawr’s 10^th annual \”Christmas In The Park.\”

As a pre-winter breeze shifted the overcast sky to reveal the largest and brightest full moon in 15 years, two spare \”sleighs,\” on loan from the North Pole, took event-goers through a large cavalcade of fixed and inflatable holiday decorations.

Mayor Frank Filipek Sr. said an estimated 8,000 people took part in the three-day event Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 12-14.

\”This is the only event of its kind in the State of New Jersey which is free of charge,\” Filipek said.

In addition to face-painting and visits with Santa himself, Baby Paws of Sicklerville was also on hand, providing a petting zoo and pony rides.

Encompassing almost the entire Recreation Centre complex, the sleigh ride course snaked its way through an ever-expanding trail, which grows from year to year.

Along with the Tree Lighting and Parade and Christmas In the Park, the Borough of Bellmawr sponsored a House Decorating Contest December 14-18.

Gloucester City Board of Ed Honors Jim and Peg McQuaid

At the recommendation of Superintendent Paul Spaventa, the Gloucester City Board of Education recognized the commitment and efforts of several district faculty and facilities staff members during last week’s monthly meeting.

Spaventa lauded retirees Jim and Peg McQuaid, who together have spent almost 40 years serving the district.

Jim worked as the cafeteria custodian at the high school for several years, as well as the lead on summer moving projects and snow removal.

Peg was assistant manager of the cafeteria before joining the Mary Ethel Costello School Facilities staff.

The superintendent stated both of the McQuaids \”were great workers …and even better people.\”

Player of the game: Gerry Wixted led the Irish with 25 points and 12 rebounds. He also went 8-of-10 from the foul line in the second half. Eyes on Blair: Montez Blair, who led Timber Creek with 20 points, displayed his all-around game with Navy coach Billy Lange in the stands. Blair has already made a verbal commitment to play for the Midshipmen.

Margaret Gorman, Wife of former City Treasurer and NJ State Assemblyman Francis Gorman

Margaret C. Gorman (McHugh) passed away suddenly on her 78th birthday, December 22, 2008 Of Gloucester City. She is predeceased by her loving husband Francis J. Gorman who was a former Gloucester City treasurer and NJ State Assemblyman. $\"cross$

She is survived by her 10 children: Francis (Bonnie) Gorman. Regina (James Lanard) Gorman, John (Anna Maria), Edward (Deborah Eng), Bridget (Bruce) Britton, James (Patricia) Gorman, Robert (Denise) Gorman, Cecilia (Thomas Murphy) Gorman, Matthew (Margaret) Gorman, Margaret (Paul) Gorman-Kain, John (Anna Maria) Gorman, Edward (Deborah Eng) Gorman.

She is also survived by 25 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, loving brothers and sisters-in-laws, numerous nephews and nieces and pre-deceased by one granddaughter, Megan. Margaret was a loving and caring mother.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend her Viewing on Saturday from 8 am to 10:30 am at the McCann-Healey Funeral Home: 851 Monmouth Street (at Brown Street), Gloucester City. Followed by a 11 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary\’s Roman Catholic Church, 426 Monmouth St. Gloucester City, NJ. No Friday night viewing. Entombment New Saint Mary\’s Mausoleum, Bellmawr.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Church of the Holy Spirit for Shirley Gladys Rabeau, (nee Rambo), 79, of Bellmawr, who died on December 10, 2008.

Beloved wife of Richard \”Dick\”. Devoted mother of Karen (Newt) Cropper, Richard \”Drew\”. (Christine), Donna (Ken) Stubbs, Susan (Wayne) Krebl and Timothy (Mary). Loving grandmother of Michael (Elizabeth) Gehron, Sarah and Richard Rabeau, Julie Carroll, Rachel and Lisa Stubbs, Jessica (Christian) Campagna, Katie Wheeler, Erik Krebl, Nicholas (Alexis), Tim, Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Rabeau. Cherished great grandmother of Jacob Gehron, Cassidy Carroll, Christian and Emily Campagna, Mayah Khan, and Phaedra and Jeanne Rabeau.

Shirley loved being surrounded by her family and friends and had a great love of animals. She was a member of the Golden Girls Bowling League at Westbrook Lanes and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the Church of Holy Spirit. When not at home, she enjoyed being at the shore.

WAWA ENLARGING PARKING LOT

GLOUCESTER CITY-The two vacant buildings in the 1300 unit block of Market Street next to the WaWa store are being demolished. The Wawa company owns the buildings and will be making the store\’s parking lot larger once the work is completed.

In 2006 Wawa representatives appeared before the City Planning $\"Wawa$ Board asking for permission to enlarge the local store. The application for the expansion was granted but the plans apparently were put on hold. The larger parking lot will be a welcome addition for customers as it is sometime difficult to find a place to park.

As for the demolition, one of the vacant buildings was the long time home of Gloucester Hardware owned by The Clements family. While the other building was used for a variety of different businesses. Some of which included Revelli\’s Grocery Store, Heisers Deli/Luncheonette, Adams Printing, and a video store to mention a few.

Daily Attacks in Iraq Drop Nearly 95 Percent

WASHINGTON, Dec. 22, 2008 – The number of daily attacks in Iraq has dropped nearly 95 percent since last year, a U.S. military official said yesterday.

Iraq suffered an average of 180 attacks per day this time last year. But over the past week, the average number was 10, Army Brig. Gen. David G. Perkins, a Multinational Force Iraq spokesman, said.

\”This is a dramatic improvement of safety throughout the country,\” Perkins told reporters during a wide-ranging news conference in Baghdad yesterday.
He added that the country’s murder rates have dropped below levels that existed before the start of American operations in Iraq. In November, the ratio was 0.9 per 100,000 people.

Gloucester City Not Very Friendly to Rental Property Owners

Is Gloucester City Housing {GCH} picking on all businesses in the city or are they just targeting rental property owners? As a property owner on Market Street $\"073107_1327_LettersBell1\"$ it never ceases to amaze me the tricks GCH keeps pulling out of their little bag of tricks. First they raise registration from $50 to $150. per unit. This justifies them having an agent to inspect every rental unit in the city.

As a tenant, or even a homeowner, I\’m not to keen on having a stranger come into my place and snoop around. Do I have something to hide??? Nope. I do my best to keep up to code and keep my tenants comfortable.If the tenant has a problem they let me know. If I fail to resolve the issue, then Housing should be contacted.

I\’m really surprised and disappointed that no other landlord has spoken up. I know…assume position and take it like a man. What is the registration going to be next year…..$500. per????

It seems the local politicians have no checks and balances.

If Gloucester City wants to get rid of all the rental units , start with mine. Make me a fair offer and its yours.
