Gloucester City School Board members said excellent progress is being made with getting ready for the upcoming school year this September.

During last week\’s meeting, they said the auditorium in the high school has been repainted and new chairs were installed.

Also, a new floor was put in at Mary Ethel Costello School, and a new roof is coming soon.

At Cold Springs School a new playground will replace the old one.

Also, the district needed to hire teachers, special education teachers, and a security officer. The Board approved all of these hires last week.

When questioned by a resident about the process for hiring new teachers, members said they are selective and go over the resumes. They read through them and see if they are qualified for the job, or not.

The Board also approved buying some new textbooks for the students.

There were no student representatives at the meeting, due to summer vacation.

Superintendent Paul Spaventa said that registration for new students has gone well, and that, \”our public schools in Gloucester will meet the individual needs, no matter what they would be.\”

The next meeting will be Tuesday, September 9, at 7 p.m. in the High School Media Center.
