North Brunswick Police Lt. Christopher Zerby was described as a \”dedicated son,\” a \”family man\” and a \”cop\’s boss\” during his funeral Mass on Saturday, held at Our Lady of Peace Church in North Brunswick.

(Aug. 20, 2008 – Cape May, NJ)… Cooler than normal temperatures for August accompanied by a fresh ocean breeze kept most of the fleet tied to the dock on Day Three of the 2008 Mid-Atlantic $500,000. Although it was indeed a beautiful day for the beach, shopping or taking in some of the sights of Cape May and Ocean City, Maryland, less than favorable conditions were found offshore by the 21 boats that gave it a go today. For the second day in a row the weight categories of the leaderboard remained unchanged. The weather forecast looks good for the next two days and a large portion of the 141 participating boats still have two days left to fish so it’s shaping up to be another exciting finish for sportfishing’s \”Main Event.\”

Gene Upshaw, an 11-time All-Pro NFL lineman and the executive director of the NFL players’ union, has died of complications from pancreatic cancer, The Associated Press reports. He was 63. A longtime on-the-field force for the Oakland Raiders and Los Angeles Raiders, Upshaw was also the longest-tenured labor leader in sports.

TRENTON – Luis Silva, 54, the New Jersey Corrections Ombudsman, died on Tuesday afternoon after a short illness, New Jersey Public Advocate Ronald K. Chen announced today.

Silva, a Mantua Township resident, served as the Corrections Ombudsman since 2001, first as part of the Department of Corrections and then as part of the Department of the Public Advocate when it was restored in 2006. He served as Assistant Ombudsman for nine years prior to his appointment as Ombudsman.

The 40 football-playing schools from the three leagues would be merged into four divisions of 10 schools each.

The realigment plan, devised by a state association 33-member committee to address the issue of imbalance between public and non-public schools, eliminates traditional leagues in North Jersey for football. But it doesn\’t address what many had hoped for — a separate league for non-public schools only.

The plan will be voted on by the NJSIAA executive committee in October and if passed would go into effect next year. Those who want to appeal have by Sept. 2 to submit their concerns

BROOKLYN, N.Y., Aug 19, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — While all eyes turn to our nation\’s Olympians overseas, scores of local American heroes of another ilk will be celebrated during a competition closer to home. Troops from every Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard command in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey have been invited to take part in \”Calling All Guards\” at KeySpan Park at 1904 Surf Avenue in Brooklyn on Thursday, August 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Calling All Guards is presented by the Brooklyn Cyclones minor league baseball team and the US Family Health Plan at Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers, a Department of Defense-designated healthcare plan that serves local military families. The competition will include an array of athletic training drills from various sports, although details are being kept under wraps until event day to heighten excitement.

All teams will be honored during an on-field ceremony from 6:15 – 6:30 p.m., prior to the Cyclones\’ Military Appreciation game against the Oneonta Tigers. The triumphant team of troops will receive a trophy (the Calling All Guards Cup) and throw out the first pitch. In addition, those who show their military ID at the box office that day will receive box seats for just $10 for the 7 p.m. game.

Ron Flemming down at Cape May Bait and Tackle says that with warmer water temps, fishing continues to improve. Solid evidence of warmer water is this week’s prize-winner Vince Sickaro, with a 7 ¾ pound, 22 inch sheepshead caught at Cape May Point jetty with crab as bait. Kingfish action is good with some close to 2-pound, caught using bloodworms around the Point jetties and Sunset Beach. He has also seen mixed catches of weakfish, fluke and croakers.
