Vandals continue to destroy Angels Playground, Plans for Chathman Square Announced, Update on WaWa; Sports Arena in Bellmawr?

Tips and Snippets by Bill:

GLOUCESTER CITY-Once again we have to report that Angels Playground, Middlesex and Burlington Streets has been destroyed by vandals. The vandalism of the park was first reported in July 2007, six months after it was built. Photos taken today, Monday, December 1, show graffitti written on every piece of park equipment. The sign, Angels Playground, is damaged on both sides.

Brad Jeffries, in his July 31st, 2007 Letter to the Editor complained about the individuals who were destroying the playground. He wrote,

The problem with the new playground is the other kids who use it. I am talking about the teenagers that come after the sun goes down and are there until all hours of the night.I could live with the noise, but the language used and the mess they leave behind are a disgrace.

Katia Williamson, 28, the mother of the girls who died in the July 4, 2002 fire in Gloucester City donated $10,000 towards the construction of the playground in their memory.

Sixteen months later and the problem still exists. The park is located two blocks from the police station.

Mayor Bill James said today that the City will replace the sign. \”There is an advisory committee that is studying ways to combat the ongoing problem of graffitti not only here but in other parts of the City. We are looking at tougher laws to punish the offenders. The law would also hold the parents responsibiliuty for the damage.\”

In other matters, James reported that the City has requested architect drawings for single family townhouses to be built at Chathman Square. The bids were to be received at Council\’s worksession. James said they had a inquiry from a prospective buyer but he wanted to keep the property as apartments. \”The City is not interested in more apartments. We don\’t want the property to be used for that purpose.\”

The owners of WaWa, on Market Street, is demolishing the two properties they own near their store, (the former video and hardware stores) to enlarge the parking lot. \”They had placed boards over the windows of the vacant stores. That was unsightly. We told WaWa to do something with the buildings.\” The company originally had planned on adding on to the main store but that project has been put on hold for now,\” said the Mayor.

The plans to build a Commerce Bank now TD Bank, at Broadway and Cumberland Street, are proceeding. The project had been slowed because of a change being made to the traffic flow on Cumberland Street. It had to be approved by the State Department of Transportation. l

The construction on a new family style restaurant, at 4th and Jersey Avenue, Gloucester City continues. The foundation is nearing completion and hopefully the framework for the building will be started before the end of the year. The old Sports Corner Bar was once located at this intersection. The property is owned by JK Venture Enterprises, LLC.

A new owner has purchased the old Mansion House at King Street and Jersey Avenue. The property is under renovation. The bar will be called Heavy on The Harbor.

Mark Matthews\’ Blog is reporting today about a possible sports arena being built in that community……he writes,

The BIG news is Bellmawr has been proposed as a location for the new Comcast Spectrum. Insiders say its one of the top two choices! Plus there are designs online! Another top thought… Why are two of our top politicians(Andrews and Corzine) fighting Delaware River dredgings being dumped on New Jersey soil because of contaminants, but Andrews\’ home town has taken millions of pounds of dredged New York Port Authority soil and no one notices?
