BERNARD F. \”BARNEY\” MCLAUGHLIN of Audubon Park, WWII Navy Hero

Private funeral services were held for USN Retired Bernard F. \”Barney\” McLaughlin, 90, who passed away on December 4, 2008.

Mr. McLaughlin was born in Philadelphia and had been a resident of Audubon Park.

Barney had enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, and had made a career out of it, retiring in January of 1956 as a Chief Gunner’s Mate. He had faithfully defended his country during WWII and was a Pearl Harbor Survivor who served on the USS San Francisco (CA-38) from 1936 to 1943 and participated in the invasion at Normandy. Barney was a decorated war veteran who refused the Purple Heart Medal and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific w/6 stars, European Theater, National Emergency w/1 star, American Area, Navy Occupation, China Service, Presidential Unit, Good Conduct and WWII Victory Medals. After retiring Barney had joined the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and was a member of the USS San Francisco Memorial Foundation. Mr. McLaughlin had worked at James Place Liquors in Blackwood as Manager.

Barney will be fondly remembered as an easy going and gentle family man who enjoyed the opportunities to travel the world. He loved baseball and was an animal lover; including his three cats and faithful companion \”Fluff\”.

Mr. McLaughlin leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 65 years Grace E. (nee Benner) of Audubon Park, and is the father of Kathleen Derbyshire of Mullica Hill and Jessie (Ed) Hufnell of Deptford. Barney is the proud grandfather of Coleen Griffin and Mikaela Hufnell.

The McLaughlin family will remember and pay tribute to Barney privately on December 7th \”on a date that will live in infamy\” FDR.
