Regarding the president’s national address to students on Tuesday, Sept. 8

 By Bill Cleary

Mount Ephraim School Superintendent Joseph Rafferty released the following statement sent to school families at 7 PM tonight through the District\’s Connect Ed System.

\”I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday weekend.

The staff is looking forward to the 1st full day of school on Tuesday September 8th.

I want to take this opportunity to let our school families know that we will not be airing President Obama’s opening day speech. This decision was made due to scheduling constraints and not having an opportunity to allow parents to be fully informed of the content.

However, we do encourage all families to take the time to watch the speech as it is replayed on the White House web site. The President will be speaking about setting academic positive goals for the upcoming school year. Discussing the content of the speech could provide an excellent opportunity to have an academic conversation with your child.

Thank you and we are looking forward to a great school year.\”

Brooklawn School Superintendent Dr. John Kellmayer, who originally said the broadcast was not going to be shown to students because of the controversy, has decided to allow students to view it.

\”Now that the President\’s speech has been released to the public and the idea of a lesson plans and how children can help the President has been dropped, I am now allowing teachers to show the speech if they wish to. I find nothing in the speech that is political or controversial.\”

Gloucester City School Superintendent Paul Spaventa,

\”We will be taping the speech due to time and scheduling constraints and showing it to the students if appropriate\”.
