Camden City Relying More Often on Surrounding Fire Departments for Help

| courierpostonline.com | Courier-Post

RELATED FIREFIGHTERS SICK LEAVE JUST SMOKE AND MIRRORS

Despite pouring more than $60 million into overtime for off-duty firefighters to fill in for absent colleagues over the past 15 years, firefighters say incidents like this prove that Camden hasn\’t done enough to keep them and residents safe. Union leaders claim the department has been understaffed and underequipped for years. As a result, they say, the city is not only risking public safety, but increasingly relying on resources from other towns. Surrounding municipalities sent fire engines, ladders, rescue vehicles, staff and other equipment to help the Camden Fire Department battle blazes a staggering 383 times in 2009, twice as many as the year before. To department critics, the solution is not hiring but cracking down on contractual staffing requirements, overtime rules and payout policies that have inflated department budgets. Fiscal watchdog Kelly Francis said former state-appointed leader Theodore Davis\’ recent attempts to limit overtime have shown that the department can still function just fine with less money. \”Has Camden burned down since Judge Davis cut the overtime?\” Francis asked.

VIDEO: …Can you Answer Jay\’s History Questions?

You would think that there are some things that every American knows, like who America won independence from, but you would be sadly wrong.

Jay Leno’s man on the street interviews asked a few simple questions. You might be shocked at the answers (or lack thereof)

Thankfully grandpa saves the day for that one family at the end of the video.

Progressives seem to be succeeding in their efforts to dumb down America to the point to where we do not even know our own history.

If this new movement of conservatism is going to have any lasting impact on bringing America back to its founding principles, history must be restored!

Here is another part of the reason we are in deep trouble in our Beloved America; we are an uneducated electorate. This week, sit your children down, and explain to them the details of how we came to be a FREE AMERICA!..WB Rice

Are libraries unnecessary?

| Philadelphia Inquirer | 07/09/2010

Their budgets and staffs are shrinking, but people continue to rely on them.

By Marilyn Johnson

The United States is beginning an interesting experiment in democracy: We\’re cutting public library funds, shrinking our public and school libraries, and, in some places, closing them altogether. This has nothing to do with whether the libraries are any good, or whether their staff provides useful service to the community. The budget of the country\’s highest-circulating library, in Queens, N.Y. – named the best system in the United States last year by Library Journal – is due to shrink by a third. Los Angeles\’ libraries are being slashed, and, beginning this week, their doors will be locked two days a week. In Philadelphia, the mayor has threatened the latest in a series of library budget reductions. Such cuts and close calls are happening across the country. The rationale is that we won\’t miss a third of our librarians and libraries the way we\’d miss a third of our firefighters and firehouses. But I wonder.
