Groups say free fishing license could cost New Jersey both money and quotas
The alliance, which wants a fee of $15, argues it is needed to fund fishery
programs by the state Division of Fish and Wildlife. The river herring fishery will be closed this year and shad in 2012 because the division simply does not have enough money to manage them. That leaves some wondering whether summer flounder could be next.
\”They only have a $600,000 budget for marine fisheries. There\’s no money to do federally mandated fishery management plans,\” said Ken McDermott III, vice president of the alliance\’s Cape May and Cumberland county chapter.
A bill creating a free registry has passed the state Senate and Assembly and awaits a signature from Gov. Chris Christie. Because the state did not meet a Jan. 1 federal mandate to create a registry, New Jersey anglers now have to pay a $15 annual federal fee to fish for certain species. That money goes to the federal government.
