CHFD News: Cherry Hill Firefighters Battle House Fire

Approximately 1425 hours on Monday (Feb. 7) afternoon Cherry Hill Firefighters were alerted to a report of a house fire in the 400 block of Downs Drive. Squad 13, Squrt 1331, Ladder 1344, and Battalion 13, along with a BLS unit responded on the initial alarm. Battalion 13 upgraded the assignment to a working fire dispatch adding Ladder 1324, with a visible column of smoke from Station 3.

Three companies were on the scene with in five minutes of dispatch and found a single family dwelling with fire on the first and second floor. The fire was extending rapidly into the attic and threatening the neighbor’s home. Squad 13\’s crew deployed a 2 1/2\” hand line and initiated an attack on the main body of fire in the two car garage. Battalion 13 assumed command and Squrt 1331\’s crew deployed a 1 3/4\” hose line to the second floor and the two engine companies moved inside to extinguish the fire.

Ladder 1344 and 1324 conducted a primary search with negative results and initiate ventilation of the dwelling. Members opened up walls and ceilings to assist the engine companies with extinguishing the fire in the attic space. Engine 1322 was special called into the scene as a rapid intervention crew.

Mutual aid from Lawnside, Haddonfield, and Maple Shade provided coverage for Cherry Hill Fire stations. The fire was place under control with in 25 minutes. No injuries were reported. A total of 3 engine companies, 2 ladder companies, and 3 chief officers responded to the scene.

Also survived by maternal grandparents Dolly and Jack Rotchford of the Villas, NJ, formerly of Gloucester City and the late Charles C. Mader. Paternal grandparents Harry S. Amwake, III and Anna May Amwake of Newport Ritchie, FL, formerly of Vineland. Nephew of Dee and John Prendergast, Chalie Mader, Walt and Marcie Mader, Cheryl and Al Scuibba, Lizzy and Mike Cuthbert and Esther Amwake. Twelve cousins.

 Harry was a 2009 graduate of Gloucester Catholic High School where he was a football star. He received a scholarship to attend Wesley College. He was a wonderful son, grandson, brother, nephew and friend who was loved by all who knew him and he will be deeply missed.

 Relatives and friends are invited to attend a viewing Saturday 10:30am to 1pm at St. Mary’s Church, 426 Monmouth St., Gloucester City. Mass of Christian Burial 1:30pm at the church. Interment private.

Catholic Charities, Diocese of Camden, 2011 Justice for All Honorees

 

On February 3, Catholic Charities, Diocese of Camden, Inc., announced the 2011 Justice for ALL honorees. This year’s honorees include Ron Evans, Jim and Lynn Cummings, Monsignor Michael Mannion and the Ravitz Family from Generation to Generation.

In its eighth year, the Justice for ALL Dinner recognizes individuals and groups who exemplify outstanding spirit of community, social justice and goodwill. The 2010 Justice for ALL dinner raised more than $100,000, which in turn, enabled Catholic Charities to provide direct assistance to end crises, create stabilization within families, prevent eviction and utility disconnection, fulfill prescription needs and provide food to more than 1,800 families and individuals throughout the Diocese.
