AVELLA, Pa. —

A massive fire that burned in several liquid storage tanks at a natural gas facility in western Pennsylvania is out, but several local fire departments are helping to make sure the fire does not restart.

At least three contract workers at the site, owned by Chesapeake Appalachia, were injured. Two were flown by medical helicopter to Pittsburgh hospitals. The third was taken by ambulance. Their names and conditions have not been released.

\”It\’s scary,\” said Dana Checchini, who lives nearby. \”Even if you don\’t know the person, it still affects you, because you know somebody had to have gotten hurt by it.\”

Emergency officials in Washington County say the blast in Independence Township was reported at about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday.

The location is roughly 15 miles southeast of Follansbee, W.Va., and nearly every volunteer fire department in Brooke County crossed the state line to assist in the firefighting effort.

Five \”frack tanks\” — steel tanks used to hold liquids — caught fire and burned until just before 10 p.m., according to Katy Gresh, a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental protection.

Three gas wells on the site were not affected.

While regulators believe there is no threat to residents living nearby, many reported feeling the initial blast and several secondary explosions.

Michigan City to Lay Off Entire Fire Department | Firehouse.com

The layoffs affect all 27 Allen Park firefighters except for the department\’s fire chief, who is appointed.

Firefighters in Allen Park this morning were still reeling over news that the city \"Images-29\" council voted to issue layoff notices to nearly the entire department.

The notices to the department\’s 27 firefighters are to be issued today and would take effect in 30 days, although Mayor Gary Burtka said he\’s \”hoping to negotiate to avoid that.\”

City Administrator Eric Waidelich said today that the city doesn\’t intend to shutter the department, although the city has talked to other municipalities theoretically about how to share some city services.

The Allen Park City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to issue the notices on the advice of the lawyer that handles the city\’s union negotiations, in an effort to win concessions from firefighters, he said.

\”The city is doing everything within its power to not lay off firefighters,\” Waidelich said. \”It\’s just the economy.\”

The city\’s 2010-2011 budget was originally projected to break even, with $21 million in revenue to cover $20.7 million in expenses, Waidelich said. But falling property tax revenues and residents\’ failure to pay taxes and emergency medical service bills has contributed to a $1 million shortfall, he said.

GLOUCESTER CITY RECEIVES AWARD FROM CAMDEN COUNTY MUNICIPAL JOINT INSURANCE FUND

 Gloucester City was recently selected by the Camden County Joint Insurance Fund as the winner of the award for \”Best Overall Performance\” for a municipality in the Joint Insurance Fund with over 50 Employees for 2010. Gloucester City received a plaque and $1500 to be used for safety equipment and material. The Camden County Joint Insurance Fund is made up of 36 municipalities, fire districts and authorities in South Jersey.

 

GLOUCESTER CITY INSTITUTES HOUSING AND BUILDING CODE COMPLAINT FORM

 

Gloucester City has created a Housing and Building Code Complaint Form for residents and businesses to report a complaint regarding a variety of issues. The City hopes that this will aid individuals who have a complaint and cannot stop by the Housing Office or the Municipal Building. The Complaint form can be accessed on the City website www.cityofgloucester.org, by hitting the tab for government and then for the housing department.

 

Your complaint will be kept confidential and will be looked at in a timely manner. The City believes this complaint form will allow the city to act on complaints in a more efficient manner.

 

GLOUCESTER CITY RECEIVES GRANT FOR WATER AND SEWER LINES

 

  Gloucester City was recently awarded a Small Cities CDBG grant in the amount of $500,000.

This award will provide funds to replace the sewer line on Monmouth Street between Broadway and East Railroad and to replace sewer and water lines under the railroad tracks located on Monmouth Street.

 

This project will be put out to public bid in the next few months. The City anticipates this project to get started sometime in late summer or early fall of 2011.

JONES NAMED 2010-11 NJAC \”PONY WILSON\” MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

 


Pitman, NJ—Kean University senior forward Jonathan Jones (Linden, NJ/Linden) has \"Florida been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference \”Pony Wilson\” Men’s Basketball Player of the Year for the 2010-11 season. His selection highlighted the 15-member 2010-11 NJAC men’s basketball all-conference team which was announced on February 22. All selections were made via a vote of the league’s 10 head coaches. 


A three-time all-conference selection, Jones currently leads the NJAC in scoring (24.9 points per game), rebounding (14.2 per game) and field goal percentage (.594). A six-time NJAC Player of the Week selection, Jones ranks as the NCAA Division III national leader in both rebounding and double-doubles (23) as of the latest NCAA statistics through games of February 13. Against NJAC competition, he finished the conference season as the leader in both scoring (25.5 points per game) and rebounding (14.2 per game), while ranking second in the conference in field goal percentage (.611).

Siracusa earns NJAC honors


\"Pine Ewing, NJ … Senior Steve Siracusa (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) was named to the 2010-2011 New Jersey Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball All-Conference Honorable Mention team.

 

Siracusa ranked second in the NJAC in rebounds this season averaging 9.0 per game. He was also sixth in the conference in steals (2.0 avg./g) and third in minutes played per game (33.4).

 

The captain and lone senior on the Lions’ squad, Siracusa registered six double-doubles during the season. His 22-point, 16 rebound performance against Centenary College notched career-highs in both categories. The 6’ 3\” forward led TCNJ in rebounds 20 times during the season, assists eight times, and in scoring three times.

 

During the 2010-11 season, Siracusa averaged 10.2 points per game, grabbed 224 boards, nabbed 50 steals, and blocked nine shots. He finished his career ranked 6th all-time in rebounds in Lions’ program history with 587 to his credit in just three seasons.

 

Siracusa will graduate with a degree in health and exercise science.

Decree issued establishing St. Damien Parish, Ocean City

Bishop Joseph Galante formally announces the establishment of St. Damien Parish, \"St formed through the consolidation of St. Augustine, Ocean City; St. Frances Cabrini, Ocean City; and Our Lady of Good Counsel, Ocean City on March 23, 2011.

The announcement establishing the new parish was made in a formal decree, which is published in the February 18 edition of the Catholic Star Herald.

Fr. Michael P. Rush has been named pastor of the new parish, for a six-year term. The parish of St. Damien, whose boundaries will be those of the existing parishes, will serve approximately 2300 families in Ocean City.

St. Augustine Church will be the primary worship site, with St. Frances Cabrini and Our Lady of Good Counsel being maintained as worship sites.

It is the 31st decree issued by Bishop Joseph Galante in a diocesan-wide reconfiguration of parishes announced two years ago to strengthen parishes and improve pastoral care to the people of the diocese. The reconfigurations are a result of more than a year of study by parish and deanery planners, who considered population and demographic trends, the number of diocesan priests available for ministry, Mass attendance and trends in religious practice.
