Independent Women\’s Voice: Remember the CLASS Act?

Back in October of 2011, the Obama administration had to pull the plug on the CLASS act — the health care law\’s provision to provide for long-term insurance for assisted living. The CLASS Act had collapsed under its own weight and sheer unworkability. Since it would be impossible to show that CLASS would be both affordable and fiscally solvent for the next 75 years, it was abandoned.

City of Gloucester City Re-Organization Meeting | Gloucester City News

By Sara Martino

Gloucester City News

Mayor William James and City Council members expressed their appreciation to the City employees, department heads and volunteers, who all worked together for the good of the city, during last week’s Reorganization meeting.

The meeting was opened with an invocation by Deacon Frank Crosson of St. Mary’s Church.

\”We appreciate the honor to open this meeting,\” he said after stating that Monsignor Curran was in Ireland.

Crosson asked for blessings on the Council during the coming year, which he thought might be a very stressful year due mostly due to the present economy.

The mayor said the deacon is also a retired police officer, and works for the Attorney General’s office.

There were no new members to be sworn in this year and the meeting proceeded with resolutions and a list of appointments. No one in the sparse audience addressed council in the Open Forum portion.

Most of the appointments remained the same, such as: John B. Kearney as City Solicitor, Edward Vernick as City Engineer, Paul Dougherty as Prosecutor, Charles Wigginton as Public Defender and Environmental Resolutions, Inc. as City Planner.

Also appointed were: Brett Wiltsey, Dilworth Paxson, LLP, as Counsel to the Tax Office; Christine O’Hearn as Labor Secretary; T&M Associates & Consulting Engineers as Special Projects Engineers; RT Environmental Services, Inc. as Environmental Engineer; and Parker Mc-Cay, P.A. as Bond Counsel.

Jack Lipsett was appointed as City Administrator, and Bob Booth and William Labbree were appointed as directors of the Enterprise Zone Corporation for the City.

The Gloucester City News and the Courier-Post were designated as the official newspapers.

There were a total of 38 resolutions and appointments that were all approved by City Council.

Louisa Llewellyn was appointed as an Alternate #2 member on the Gloucester City Historic Commission, with a term expiring in December 2012. There is still one vacant seat on the Commission.

Members of the Planning Board include: Jack Murphy, Adrianne Parent, Nicholas Marchese, Elana King and Steve Martorano.

Joanne Gurick and Barbara Moody were named to the Library Board of Trustees.

The text of Mayor James’ 2012 address starts on the front page of this edition.

In it he said: \”Gloucester City is not alone in these difficult economic times and your elected officials are not sitting back and feeling sorry for themselves or crying to the state for bailouts. Instead we are remaining positive.\”
