Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 AM on Saturday, June 16 for Mrs. Rosemarie DeCastro of Haddon Heights NJ who passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at the age of 66. She is the wife of Michael F. DeCastro Jr., who has been the manager/coach of the Haddon Heights American Legion Baseball team for decades.

Carol Byrd-Bredbenner, professor of nutritional sciences

The proposal by Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City to ban the sale of soft drinks above a certain size has focused attention on what Americans eat, and how much they eat at a sitting. Carol Byrd-Bredbenner, professor of nutritional science in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers, points out that portion size, at home and in restaurants, has grown considerably in recent years, and so have our waistlines and our risk of heart disease, diabetes and certain kinds of cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7%) and approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese. Also according to the CDC, the obesity rate for children in New Jersey is the second highest in the nation, at 17.9 percent. Paying attention to the size of our portions can help us arrest that trend, she believes.

 

Rutgers Today: When it comes to eating and drinking, does portion size matter? Why?

PHILADELPHIA – Two La Salle teams – field hockey and men\’s outdoor track – have earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA based on their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR). Teams which score in the top 10 percent nationally in their respective sport are recognized.

\”These teams prove that it is possible to not only balance academic and athletic commitment, as most student-athletes do; but to exceed standards and post outstanding academic scores,\” said NCAA President Mark Emmert. \”The drive and determination shown in the classroom and on the field by these men and women represent what it means to be an NCAA student-athlete.\”

Overall, 954 teams in NCAA Division I were honored, including 56 from the Atlantic 10 Conference. The teams in the top 10 percent have scores ranging from 978 to a perfect 1,000. Specific scores for each sport will be released on June 20.

Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The score measures eligibility and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team\’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team\’s academic performance.
