The Tom Osler Chronicles

BY JACK HEATH

Tom Osler doesn’t write about running much anymore but he still has a lot to say about \"O11091\" the sport he loves and has influenced so much in over 50 years. Most of Tom Osler’s time today is spent with his wife, Kathy, and their two sons, Eric and Billy.

Osler, now 69, still lives in Glassboro, New Jersey where he enjoys publishing Mathematical research papers (more than 120) and teaching Math at Rowan University (his 49th year as a teacher; 41 at Rowan University) and running close to 50 miles a week.

A quick review of Osler’s running accomplishments: over 2100 races run; his first national championship, a 25K race, in 1965. He captured a second national title, for a 30K race in 1967. It was the same year he finished 19th in the Boston Marathon and, later that year, self-published a seminal work on running, the 32-page classic, The Conditioning of Distance Runners. Osler also published the Serious Runner’s Handbook in the ’70s during the height of the running boom. Dr. Tim Noakes (author of The Lure of Running) said \”Conditioning of Distance Runners remains one of the absolute classic training books of the world. Tom Osler\’s great contribution was to emphasize the importance of peaking training. He was the first to verbalize that in a way that was really understandable to most athletes. Most importantly, he was absolutely correct in what he proposed. Our own research undertaken [in South Africa] shows his principles to be absolutely correct. The principles he described withstood the test of time and are unquestionably real physiological laws.\”

His second book, Serious Runner’s Handbook, sold more than 55,000 copies during the peak of the running boom in the 1970s and was called \”the best running book\” by Osler’s friend and mentor Olympian Browning Ross.

New Jersey Firearms Task Force Legislation Sticks it to Honest Gun Owners – Again!

\"NationalImage via Wikipedia

Please Immediately Call Members of the Assembly Law & Public Safety Committee

On Thursday, December 3 at 2:00 pm in State House Annex Room 12, the New Jersey Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee will hold a hearing on three bills of importance to New Jersey\’s law-abiding gun owners. It is important that members of the Assembly Law & Public Safety Committee hear from you on Thursday.

A4308 and A4304 have been introduced in an effort to address serious problems in New Jersey\’s gun rationing law that was passed in the middle of the night on June 26. NRA and fellow Second Amendment advocates warned legislators that the one-gun-a-month bill as written contained many flaws and errors which would have to be fixed down the road. A4301 is an attempt by New Jersey to comply with the grant eligibility requirements set forth in the NICS Improvement Act, passed by Congress in 2007.

As of this writing, lawmakers are still working on last minute language for A4308, which has emerged from the recommendations put forth by Governor Corzine\’s Firearm Task Force. The Task Force was supposed to create a robust exemption for law-abiding gun owners from the one-gun-a-month law. Instead, the legislation adds insult to injury by creating an ill-conceived exemption that would force gun owners to beg for permission and show \”legitimate need\” every time they wish to exercise their Constitutional right to obtain more than one handgun per month. Under the legislation that is currently proposed (and subject to possible last minute change), the average gun owner would need to show why it would not be \”feasible or practical\” to purchase the guns separately – a standard that the State Police and the courts are likely to interpret against gun owners. New Jersey\’s judiciary has repeatedly abused \”needs\” standards relating to firearms and, in its own words, is blatantly biased against gun owners: \”When dealing with guns, the citizen acts at his own peril,\” wrote the Supreme Court when it upheld the conviction of the owner of .22 rifle as an assault firearm (State v. Pelleteri).

The notion that honest persons thoroughly investigated by the state should have to beg further permission and show why it is not \”feasible or practical\” to ration their Constitutional rights is offensive and insulting, and represents another promise broken by the politicians involved in the Task Force.

Please immediately call the members of the Assembly Law & Public Safety Committee and tell them to keep their promise to gun owners and create a robust exemption for honest gun owners who have nothing to do with illegal trafficking.

A4304 will clarify the original \”one gun a month\” bill by exempting the \”transfer of handguns among licensed retail dealers, registered wholesale dealers and registered manufacturers; or transfers of handguns from any person to a licensed retail dealer or a registered wholesale dealer or registered manufacturer. As it stands now, the current law exempts sales between licensed gun dealers but not purchases by licensed dealers from firearm distributors or manufacturers which under New Jersey law are classified differently. Please contact members of the Assembly Law & Public Safety Committee and urge them to support A4304.

A4301 is a good faith attempt by New Jersey to comply with the grant eligibility requirements set forth in the NICS Improvement Act, passed by Congress in 2007. The NICS Improvement Act helped strengthen the reporting of persons who are prohibited from firearm purchases because they have been adjudicated by a court as mentally defective or as a danger to themselves or others. The NRA does have some concerns over the new language that removes the county adjuster from the expungement process in favor of the county counsel. It is the adjuster who receives New Jersey\’s mental health check form on the state license for NJ FID cards and NJ Handgun permits. Please contact the committee members and respectfully urge them to keep the county adjuster as a party to the expungement process.

By Andrew Maykuth

Inquirer Staff Writer

With a promise of $49 million in inducements from Gov. Rendell, a Greek solar-cell maker says it will break ground next year on a sprawling manufacturing facility in Philadelphia\’s Navy Yard.

HelioSphera US says the $500 million plant will employ 400 people when it begins operations in late 2011. It will be able to produce 1.2 million thin-film solar modules per year.

Panos Ninios, president of HelioSphera US, said the company chose the Navy Yard site after reaching out to eight states and visiting 35 locations.

Over 100,000 holiday lights, the Yellow Ribbon Club, and CBS in Marlton?

When: Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009

Time: 4pm-6pm

Where: 58 King Ave. Marlton, NJ 08053

\"60soldier\" Ok, what’s going on is that Beth and Tom Ronketty have decorated their home with over 100,000 lights for the holidays. They go \”overboard\” every year with their decorations in order to bring attention to a \”cause\”. Every year they are selected to be featured on CBS news for their \”decorations\” and for the \”cause they support. They did this last year and chose the Yellow Ribbon Club as recipients for this. We had a nice show of support last year and the Ronketty’s raised a few hundred dollars for the Yellow Ribbon Club.

This year they want to do it again and they decorated their home with all of those lights. We also have had some changes in the Yellow Ribbon Club recently. We no longer have the shipping assistance that we have had for 4 years and are doing all of the packing and shipping from the Drummonds home. (you can see several recent thank you notes from the troops at www.yellowribbonclub.org). The cost for shipping is now 100% on the club and they could use some help. CBS is coming out this Tuesday and will broadcast live from their home at the above address between 4pm and 6pm. The first broadcast will be exactly at 4pm. With this, CBS will also acknowledge the cause of the effort which is raising donations for the Yellow Ribbon Club to ship goodies to the troops. IF you are able to stop by and hang out a little, please do at the above address as we need patriotic eye candy to get the publics attention. Please bring flags, ribbons and anything patriotic…like motorcycles.

CBS is also doing their own thing with Toys for Tots and have asked us to invite those who come, to bring an unwrapped toy for their drive. This is a win-win night. Help kids and help support the troops.

The Ronketty’s will have light refreshments. There will be a magician so bring the kids.
