O’Toole, Russo & Rumana: BCEA President Must Step Down

Coppola Authored Memo Wishing Governor Dead

Senator Kevin O’Toole, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and his running mates Assemblymen Dave Russo and Scott \"Pine Rumana urged Joe Coppola, the President of the Bergen County Education Association (BCEA) to resign immediately:

\”The comments attributed to BCEA President Coppola are beyond inappropriate. Praying for the death of the duly elected Governor of New Jersey is not a joke, either in public or in private,\” O’Toole stated. \”The leadership of the NJEA had the opportunity to address this situation yesterday, but failed to do so. I am disappointed that the NJEA has adequately failed to address this situation.

\”Obviously, in this situation serious corrective action must be taken,\” Russo continued. \”If someone in the private sector or a student in one of New Jersey’s schools had made a similarly egregious comment they would have been fired or expelled respectively. I would hope in the future that officials in the public sector would be held to the same high standards. Failing that Mr. Coppola must resign immediately.\”

\”There is no place for that kind of language in public debate or education,\” Rumana, R-Passaic and Bergen, said of the memo. \”Governor Christie has said he is willing to take the slings and arrows that come with making the tough decisions for New Jersey, but this is going too far. \”If a student wished death upon an administrator or teacher, that student would be disciplined severely. I would expect the same standard to be applied to the professionals with whom we are entrusting our children’s lives.\”

Pet Tip of the Week

Training Your Dog Using Positive Reinforcement

There are many methods used to train dogs. One charismatic fellow makes big bucks promoting the domination or punishment theory; if you look up his videos on the Internet you will see him choking, shocking, and abusing dogs, all in the name of training. Some folks (like me) use a gentler approach. Although positive reinforcement training (using rewards) and positive punishment methods (choke chains, pinch collars, electronic or ‘shock’ collars) are both effective, the punishment methods can do some major damage to the canine in question.

A great way to begin training your dog is by using voice modulation and facial expression. That is, speak softly as though you were talking to a young child when you ask for a behavior. If Fido responds by offering you that behavior, smile and respond with praise. If Fido does not offer the correct response, frown and use a negative-sounding noise or a word like, \”Hey!\” In no time at all, your dog will catch on without the use of strong-arm tactics!
