Pet Tip of the Week

And Baby Makes Three: Preparing Fido for the New Baby

Fido is the apple of your eye, the king of the hill, the center of the universe in your home.

Until your family of three discovers it’s soon to be a family of four.

\"Brother_of_the_Wolf_Banner_Horz.[1]\" You want Fido and Junior to become BFF’s before Junior arrives, right? Here are a few tricks I’ve learned along the way to help ease the transition to second fiddle:

· Buy a tape or CD of a baby crying and play it while offering the dog a treat.

· Buy an inexpensive baby doll and treat it like a real baby for 15 minutes a day. Gradually increase the time you spend with the ‘baby’ until Fido becomes accustomed to your change in priorities.

· Make sure Fido has lots of new toys and treats when the big day arrives. Try not to board him; the transition will be easier if he can stay at home with visits from a pet sitter or friend.

· Take a blanket the baby has used and bring it home for Fido to smell. That way he will be accustomed to the new smells and they won’t seem foreign to him.

· When you bring the baby home allow Fido to sniff her thoroughly. When the baby goes to bed make a fuss over Fido to let him know he’s still an important part of your life! Put extra time aside just to play with him. These first few days will make a big difference in the way your dog feels about the baby.

Red Team Grabs Lead Early,

 Coasts to Victory in WBCA
High School All-America Game presented by Nike

ATLANTAThe future of women\’s basketball shined bright in the Lone Star State during the 2010 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) High School All-America Game presented by Nike Saturday, as the Red Team held off the White Team to take the title, 101-81.

The White Team got on the board first after Texas A&M recruit Karla Gilbert made her first of two free throws, but the Red Team dominated most of the early game, leading 48-37 at the half. Meighan Simmons (Tennessee signee) scored 15 of her 21 points in the first half to lead the Red Team while Jennifer O’Neill (Kentucky signee) contributed nine of her total 15 points for the White Team in the early going.

In the middle of the second half the Red Team was up by 24 points, but the White Team stayed persistant and eventually were able to cut the lead to 10 with 6:58 remaining, but the damage was already done, and the Red Team coasted to victory.

Hunting and Fishing News for April 2

Peregrine Webcam

The NJ DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife\’s Peregrine Webcam is now streaming live video from the \"Hunting-and-Fishing-October-1927-1\" nestbox atop a building in Jersey City. Managed by the division\’s Endangered and Nongame Species Program (ENSP), the box has consistently produced young for this endangered species since 2000.
The female has laid four eggs and incubation appears to have begun. Viewers can learn more about the falcons and follow their progress through postings in Nestbox News.
The project is supported by donations alone – your support through the purchase of Conserve Wildlife License Plates and the state Income Tax Check-Off for Wildlife enables the work of ENSP to continue. Please remember the program when completing your state tax form this year.
To view the webcam, read Nestbox News, or learn more about the license plates and Check-off, visit

NJ Deer Hunter Forum

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife is hosting a New Jersey Deer Hunter Forum on three evenings in April on Antler Point Restrictions (APR). Fish and Wildlife deer biologists will present deer data for south Jersey deer management zones (DMZs) that currently have APR. Deer data will also be presented for DMZs 30, 31, 34, 43 and 47, where the South Jersey branch of the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) has requested APR regulations.
The forum will allow deer hunters who hunt south Jersey DMZs to see data for existing APR zones and deer data from the DMZs proposed for APR. The information provided at the forum may be helpful for deer hunters when completing an upcoming survey Fish and Wildlife will send to solicit deer hunter opinion on the QDMA proposal to implement APR in DMZs 30, 31, 34, 43 and 47. The forum dates are:
