Gloucester High School football trying to bring back history as Wildwood makes it | NJ.com

Those cultures will collide Friday night when the Lions host a West Jersey League Classic Division matchup that has more at stake for Wildwood than almost any game in decades — and means plenty to Gloucester City HS as well.

\”It’s our best start in awhile record-wise, but I think we’re still finding out where we are,\” said Harris, who hasn’t had a 4-1 squad since 2005. \”We’re getting into a really tough part of our schedule, and we need to be playing our best.

\”It’s a huge game for us, with all kinds of implications — division implications, playoff implications. We feel like we’ve done some things well. We’re just going to have to put it all together, and this is the time to do it.\”

The Lions (4-1 overall, 3-0 in the Classic) follow Wildwood with potential playoff teams in Woodstown and Pennsville and are searching for their first home playoff game under the lights, but the Warriors (4-2, 2-1) are making it tough for teams to look past them this season.

They’ve already won four games for the first time since 1978, and are shooting for their first winning season since 1965. Running back Wesley Hills has rushed for over 1,500 yards to lead South Jersey, and is drawing Division I interest. And head coach Rich Hans and his players are appreciating every minute of it.

\”I’ve done a lot of research, I want our kids to know exactly where they stand and how historic a season this is,\” Hans said. \”They’re pretty excited. We’ve had some pretty big crowds the last couple of games, and they’re not used to it. They’re handling it pretty well.
