This summer, as part as a multistate effort to provide safe, affordable kayak instruction, the Camden County Parks Department will host a Kayaking 101 class at Newton Lake Park on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., kicking off National Safe Boating Week.
This national, volunteer-led initiative offers low-cost kayaking instruction at more than 40 locations across eight states, with Camden County serving as the only site in New Jersey. The program is designed to introduce beginners to paddling in a safe and accessible environment.
“Kayaking is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy our renowned park system, but it can be intimidating to get started,” said Commissioner Jeffrey Nash, liaison to the Parks Department. “We are excited to provide this affordable, beginner-friendly class to our residents through the support of experienced paddlers.”
The event is supported by American Canoe Association (ACA) New Jersey, the Jersey Shore Sea Kayak Association, and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, along with a statewide team of ACA-certified instructors who follow nationally recognized training standards.
“Our volunteer instructors are excited to welcome newcomers to our sport and give them some hard-won insights about how to stay safe and keep everyone smiling when you go on your paddling adventures,” said Andrea White, National Chair of the Kayaking 101 initiative. “A great first experience can spark a lifelong connection to paddling and love for our waterways.”
The class costs $15 per person and includes kayak and gear rental. Participation is limited to 15 people. Participants will learn planning, preparation, and safety essentials, along with kayaks fundamentals and paddling techniques. Instruction is provided by ACA-certified New Jersey volunteers, supported by experienced safety teams.
