TCNJ WRESTLING TEAM WINS TWO OF THREE AT WHITEHILL DUALS

Williamsport, PA…The College of New Jersey wrestling team’s bid for a second straight title at the a14th Annual Budd Whitehill was derailed in the team’s first match of the tournament as the Lions fell to St. Johns (MN) University in the opening round of the tournament on Friday.

TCNJ then won its next two dual meets to remain alive in the consolation bracket beating John Carroll University by the score of 25-13 and then got past Case Western Reserve University 43-13.

By going 2-1 on the day, the Lions are now 9-2 on the season.

The Johnnies knocked off the third-seeded Lions by the score of 34-8 sending TCNJ into the consolation bracket. In that match, TCNJ managed only a pair of wins, both by major decision, as senior Ray Sarinelli (Rockaway, NJ/West Morris) at 133 and junior Al Wonesh (Columbus, NJ/North Burlington) at 174 each won their weight classes.

Things didn’t get any easier for the ninth-ranked Lions in their second match of the tournament as they faced 22nd-ranked John Carroll University. TCNJ, however, dominated from the beginning winning the first seven matches. Junior Greg Osgoodby (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick) pinned his opponent at 174 pounds in 3:16, while classmate Ryan McCabe (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) posted a victory by major decision at 157 to pace the Lions.

The final match on Friday was against Case Western Reserve University and TCNJ responded with its second straight win. The Lions held a narrow 10-7 lead midway through the match before reeling off five straight wins. Wonesh and Osgoodby recorded back-to-back pins at 165 and 174 pounds securing the win for TCNJ.

The Lions return to action Saturday morning facing Messiah College at 9 a.m.
