Bryan and Haines Recipients of The Joseph T. Stiles Memorial Award

Sonny Bryan of Gloucester City High School and Gregg Haines of Gloucester Catholic were the recipients of this year’s Joseph T. Stiles Memorial Awards. The awards were presented before the Thanksgiving rivalry game between the two schools, which was won by Gloucester Catholic.

The Stiles award is presented to a senior football player from both schools that are nominated by a vote of the athlete’s peers. The names are then submitted to a committee that consist of friends of Stiles who make the final selection based on the most votes the nominees receive. In case of a tie, the selection committee would then decide the outcome.

Mr. Stiles was a 1962 graduate of Gloucester High, and played offensive guard and linebacker during his four-year career on the Lions football team. Known as \”Joe the Jet,\” he is remembered for his agility and strength, but most importantly his genuine love for the game of football. Whether he was playing in a big game or a scrimmage practice, he approached every play the same – with a big heart and a \”can-do\” attitude. He was a loyal friend and teammate, who displayed excellent leadership on and off the field.

Members of the selection committee include:Bob Bevan, Bill Cleary, Bob Fritz, Sam Gager, Jim Goldschmidt and Bill Rettig.
