Football Icon Jerry Rice Makes Big Play for Kidney Health

Jerry Rice is working with the National Kidney Foundation to promote kidney health

(NAPSI)—Fans might think Jerry Rice, at 56, should be satisfied to sail silently into the sunset reflecting on his Pro Football Hall of Fame status, three Super Bowl rings, and two decades in the National Football League. Indeed, the iconic wide receiver retired his professional cleats years ago.

Yet, he still uses his youthful, seemingly boundless energy to keep carrying the ball for the cause closest to his heart: tackling chronic kidney disease (CKD). “My brother Tom has CKD,” Rice said. “I’ve watched him go to dialysis three days a week for years, which is really hard on the body. He’s a very positive individual. Still, sometimes I spend the long hours that he endures just sitting by his side. It was my brother, after all, who loved, encouraged and pushed me early on by telling me that I had to make it to the NFL.”

Getting The Word Out

To that end, in a new PSA series for the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) to be broadcast nationwide, Rice focuses on promoting kidney health and raising awareness of kidney disease. The NKF is the largest, most comprehensive and long-standing organization dedicated to the awareness, prevention and treatment of kidney disease.

Given Rice’s genuine concern about and personal connection to the disease, NKF enlisted the widely beloved sports legend to help to speak to the general public as well as kidney patients. He already has lots of practice doing so up close and personally whenever he joins his brother at a neighborhood dialysis center in Jackson, Miss.

“I’d go there to mainly be with my brother, of course, but I always walk around the room to say hello and socialize with the other dialysis patients,” Rice said. “You don’t realize it until you see for yourself in centers that there are lots of people on dialysis. It puts everything in perspective whenever I start complaining. When I visit the dialysis center, people often know who I am and are happy to see me, and if I can bring a smile to some faces and make them forget even for a second, that warms my heart. That’s how I felt playing football, seeing the smiles in the stands and helping people to forget problems for a little while.”

Rice is also part of NKF’s continuing and growing Heart Your Kidneys (#HeartYourKidneys) public campaign to help elevate awareness of the kidneys to the status of other vital organs such as the heart. He is amazed that most people know very little about their kidneys and that some don’t know the kidneys are located in the lower back below the rib cage—or that each person has two. Rice hopes his new PSAs with NKF will help change that.

“It’s important to me to keep working hard to get the word out with NKF, because you can see that this really hits home for me in more ways than one,” Rice said.

Topping Off Ceremony Held for $184M Patient Tower at Jefferson Washington Township Hospital

Jefferson Washington Township Hospital reached a major milestone on Thursday, February 20th, as a “topping off” ceremony was held for its new $184 million patient tower, slated to open in summer 2021. Jefferson leadership and staff — including Dr. Stephen Klasko, President of Thomas Jefferson University and CEO of Jefferson Health — were in attendance, along with NJ state and local officials, as the final beam was lifted by a crane and put in place.

The 7-floor, 243,500-square-foot tower, being named in honor of Jefferson board member and benefactor John P. Silvestri and his family, will feature 90 private patient rooms, a two-story lobby, Same-Day Surgery Unit, roof helipad, café with outdoor dining, and more. The $222 million overall Washington Township hospital campus transformation began in 2018, with construction of an 8-level enclosed parking facility, completed in April 2019.

Firefighters Want to Know More About Proposed Pennsylvania Fire Commission

A Pennsylvania House committee is weighing a measure that seeks to make changes in how fire and emergency services are administered in the state.

The House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee took up House Bill 1819, which would create a state Fire Commission.

State Rep. Austin Davis, D-McKeesport, the bill’s sponsor, said his district includes professional and volunteer-led fire departments that face issues regarding the ability to provide essential services and the ability to recruit and retain members.

“The communities I serve in southeast Allegheny County are facing many of the same challenges in the delivery of fire and emergency medical services that we’re witnessing across this commonwealth,” Davis said.

He told the committee he’s watched as it passed more than 20 bills that have origins from the Senate Resolution 6 Report recommendations from 2018. But, while programs and incentives may offer relief, he said they don’t necessarily address the bigger, underlying problem that will allow communities to offer emergency services for years to come.

So, Davis’ bill seeks to make “a big structural change” to the way the state organizes its support for local emergency service agencies. It would take the Fire Commissioner’s office and make it a 13-member commission that would include state fire chief – who would take over the duties of the commissioner.

Eight of the commission members would come from geographic districts within the state. The governor would appoint and the state Senate would confirm them. While the chief would serve as the chair of the commission, the chief would only vote to break a tie.

While Davis’ bill drew support from the firefighting community, they did offer the committee some recommended changes to the bill.

State Fire Commissioner Bruce Trego expressed concern about the power structure between the chief and the commission.

“Having the commission serve in an advisory capacity would allow the commissioner to continue serving the commonwealth Fire Service,” Trego said. “The commission would be able to provide the commissioner with recommendations for the future of the fire service but provide the commissioner with the authority to decide on the appropriate actions.”

Trego added current law allows for a Fire Safety Advisory Committee. While that committee hasn’t been functional in several years due to funding issues, Trego said it could handle some of the responsibilities set out in Davis’ bill.

Trego also had concerns about the geographic makeup of some of the districts, which he felt may be too large.

Jay Delaney, chief of the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department and the president of the Pennsylvania Career Fire Chiefs Association, did not like that the proposed commission includes representatives from business and industry, architectural firms and insurance companies.

“Private industry representation should not be part of the independent fire commission,” he said.

State Rep. Frank Farry, R-Feasterville, who chairs the committee’s subcommittee on security and emergency response, said he appreciated getting the insights from the firefighting community on the bill.

“I think the testimony was fairly consistent in terms of some proposed changes that probably need to be made to this bill,” Farry said.

President of Philadelphia Teachers Union Calls Asbestos Issue a Humanitarian Crisis

PHILADELPHIA PA–The leader of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers (PFT) is calling for Gov. Tom Wolf to address the asbestos issue in public schools now by declaring a state of emergency.

Wolf put $1 billion in his proposed state budget for lead and asbestos remediation in the state’s schools. But with two more Philadelphia elementary schools shuttering due to asbestos, PFT president Jerry Jordan said it’s not enough.

“But we must do more, and we must do it now,” Jordan said in a statement on the PFT website. “The facilities emergency in Philadelphia’s public schools is nothing short of a humanitarian crisis.”

The PFT created the “Fund our Facilities Coalition” to ask for $170 million to clean up Philadelphia’s schools. The group cites other issues besides asbestos, including rodent/pest control, water leaks and more custodial staff to keep schools clean. Several members of the Legislature, the Philadelphia City Council as well as U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle are a part of the coalition that has asked on several occasions for the governor to do something about the schools.

“We asked. We begged,” said State Sen. Larry Farnese, D-Philadelphia, at a PFT news conference. “And now we demand there be a state of emergency called in Pennsylvania because of the condition of our schools.”

Farnese is a member of the “Fund our Facilities Coalition.”

Some lawmakers have suggested Wolf could take money from the state’s rainy-day fund to pay for the remediation. But any money taken from the fund requires approval from two-thirds of the Legislature, Lyndsay Kensinger, a spokesman for Wolf,

told The Philadelphia Inquirer

.

\”A 10th Philly school has closed this year because of asbestos,\” said state Sen. Vincent Hughes, D-Philadelphia, the minority chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, on Twitter. \”We need emergency funding to fix our schools now! Broken and toxic schools must go. This is a public health crisis.\”

The PFT has called on the governor to declare a state of emergency for several months but has praised Wolf’s proposed funding for remediation using the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program.

“The governor’s proposal to open RCAP applications to lead and asbestos remediation to the tune of $1 billion has enormous potential,” Jordan said in a statement after Wolf’s budget address. “I am extremely encouraged that the governor is taking our voices seriously and has developed a plan to bring relief.”

Ten Philadelphia-area schools have closed because of asbestos issues in the past few months. The latest closings were announced Wednesday night when Philadelphia school officials announced the temporary closures of Clara Barton and James Sullivan elementary schools.

(February 20, 2020)–– New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the closure and detour of the Tomlin Station Road/CR 607 Bridge over I-295 to begin a bridge deck replacement project in Greenwich, Gloucester County.

Beginning at 7 a.m., tomorrow Friday, February 21, NJDOT’s Contractor, South State, Inc. is scheduled to close the Tomlin Station Road Bridge over I-295.  The following signed detour will be in place:

Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the bridge project.

You can easily find out information on them from the internet, not just about them but for just about any other prominent person in that specific field. Use the internet to look into what\’s helped these people and their organizations become so successful. Then emulate their good traits in your personal, academic and professional life. You will be surprised how much inspiration you can get by just studying these people.

2. Involve yourself in as many projects as possible

Try to participate in every experiential learning opportunity that your schedule allows. This way, you\’ll get to learn something unique with every experience. You will also have more to show your examiners during your final year projects, not to mention the portfolio you will already have to present to your potential employers when you graduate, unlike other students who will only be able to list their coursework. In addition, you\’ll be far more likely to master the knowledge you\’ve been getting in classes because you\’ll be applying it and, in the process, boosting your communication and interpersonal skills.

3. Learn the value of networking

When it comes to excelling on campus, whom you know and interact with is almost as important as what you gain in class. Attend several other lectures on your campus and introduce yourself to the lecturers. Familiarize yourself with your school\’s alumni association to get a list of alumni from your field of study to find those who may wish to connect with you. You can make use of E-mail, use LinkedIn or other social media tools to connect online. However, remember there’s no substitute for a traditional, face-to-face meeting, it is always the best.

4. Work in teams

Whether it\’s a class project of creating a solar-powered car, participating in a sport, or writing essays for the school paper, get involved with your peers because most things require a team effort to produce great results. Throughout your career after graduation, you\’ll work in teams, so the skills you develop in school will help prepare you to lead teams when you graduate.

5. Seek informal leadership roles within your class

You\’re always a leader, whether you\’re officially in charge of the members of your group school project or not. It sounds counterintuitive, but you can lead from any position in a team by influencing how people work together and how they make decisions. You will learn how to recognize and deal with various situations from any position in a team, you\’ll be seen as a leader even when you take on your first job or internship. The obvious advantage of taking leadership positions is that you will always be the first to receive any information from the institution or your lecturers. You will be better suited to enjoy more resources from the class.

6. Identify your flaws and correct them

As with any course majors, engineering students need improvement. If you are part of a group, try to create a way to get feedback from your peers, group leaders, and professors. When you have concrete feedback on how you are faring, you can work to improve your academic grades and even other skills including communication and leadership. Furthermore, you\’ll learn how to receive and give constructive criticism. That\’s absolutely necessary for your future career.

7. Take a business class

As a student engineer, it\’s not enough for you to be technically proficient. You need to learn to be business savvy. A business class will also help you read and understand organization charts, you will know how to negotiate contracts, and be familiar with other functions that every engineer needs to know. This will also help you in the future to understand what to do when an accountant, lawyer, or manager gets in the way of your work. A business course will definitely take you a long way.

8. Take a design class

The world of engineering goes way beyond problem sets, laboratories, and complex theory. You may need to take a visual design course to learn to represent ideas graphically. You can supplement the design topics in your coursework by taking a cognitive science course to learn how to interpret the engineering problems in the world and understand them better. While you are at it, you can take a literature course to develop your knowledge and which will help you write and communicate more effectively.

9. Make your holidays productive

Lecturers place tremendous value on practical experience when making student assessment s to grade them. Ensure you seek out internship opportunities actively and early in your academic career. Try to demonstrate through your internships a series of evolving learning experiences; also use the internships to build your portfolio of actual projects you are involved in. Students who can show a commitment to using their summer to continue to learn are always viewed more seriously by lecturers and future employers

10. Pick the right company

As an undergraduate student, you might feel alone when confronted with hard decisions about the courses to take, or even balancing school work and your personal life. You won\’t feel alone if you develop a healthy circle of friends. Just as a company has a board that guides the organization, you can stock your friends\’ list with peers from your engineering class or other academic fields to act as a support structure for you. You can as well as have former teachers and knowledgeable family friends to also be there for you during your academic career.

Surveillance video (see below) shows two explosions outside of Mrs. Spadora around 10PM Saturday, February 15. The  94-year-old woman, who was asleep at the time of the incident, has lived in her Brooklawn

residence

since 1957.

According to police, the fireworks were thrown from two moving cars.

Brooklawn police said the explosions started a fire in a bush outside of Spadora\’s home. Police woke up Spadora as a neighbor used a hose to put out the fire.

“After I knocked on the door, it was hard for her to even get to the door, so if the house caught on fire God forbid anything could have happened to her. We were just seconds away from a catastrophe,\” Brooklawn Police investigator Raymond McKenney said.

Police said they think one of the cars is a dark color Dodge Charger. Police don\’t believe Spadora was targeted.
