According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Holt Marine Terminal encompasses 125 acres of Gloucester City waterfront property.

GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ (CNBNews)(August 3, 2026)--Driving from North Broadway onto Hudson Street recently, it was hard not to see the giant cranes blocking the skylight as you got closer to the Holt Marine Terminal in Gloucester City. Some of those cranes that towered over the Mill Block properties, located between King Street and Ellis Street, were 20 stories high. There was a constant humming noise emitted from the terminal as we drove on Ellis Street towards Mercer Street. 

You have to wonder how the people who reside so close to this terminal deal with the seven-day-a-week operation.  When a container ship carrying fruit, meat, or some other commodity arrives, residents in the area are given no consideration. Their only choices are to move or sleep with a pillow over their heads. 

Presently, the City has signed an agreement with a real estate developer who plans to build 350 apartments at the former Coast Guard Base, about 100 yards from the marine terminal. The Holt family is fighting the proposal. Their lawsuit claims that the development plan, which would be built just feet from Holt’s office building, would interfere with their operation.

59 YEARS AGO HOLT ARRIVED IN GLOUCESTER CITY

In 1967, Leo A. Holt Sr., the father of Thomas Holt, purchased 37 acres of the former New York Ship property. Interested in the same property at the time was the Camden County Municipal Utlities Authority (CCMUA). Gloucester City Mayor Vince Daily fought against the CCMUA moving into his community. Thank God for Mayor Daily. That agency processes roughly 58 million gallons of sewage every day at its main plant in South Camden. People living near it claim the smell coming from their property is sickening some days.

Holt was an independent truck driver serving Mom and Pop stores. Holt Motor Express had 10 trucks. And they owned 11 warehouses around the Philadelphia and Camden City area. Leo Holt Sr., died in 1968. After his death, his sons took over Holt Motor Express and expanded into the stevedoring business.

Wanted for Home Invasion Sexual Assault

The Philadelphia Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in locating 26-year-old Lee Johnson, who is wanted for Aggravated Indecent Assault, Burglary, Unlawful Restraint, and related charges.

The primary incident occurred on June 4, 2026, at approximately 5:30 AM at a residence on the 2200 block of E. Somerset Street.

Johnson is described as a Black male, 5’10” tall, weighing approximately 150 pounds, with a last known address on the 6300 block of Horrocks Street. 

He was most recently seen near the 6100 block of Algon Avenue.

Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to contact the Special Victims Unit at 215-685-3251 or dial 911immediately.

Jefferson Stratford Hosts Free Food Pantry & Health Fair

On Saturday, August 22 from 9am to 11am, Jefferson Stratford Hospital will host a free community food pantry and health fair on their campus at 18 Laurel Road East, Stratford, NJ 08084.

Designed to help local families prepare for the start of a new school year, the food pantry and health fair will provide access to nutritious food boxes donated by the South Jersey Food Bank, free school supplies (pencils, notebooks, erasers, highlighters, scissors and rulers) donated by Jefferson-East employees and access to healthcare resources, including representatives from Jefferson Health’s departments of primary care, weight management, infection prevention, food and nutrition, obstetrics &  gynecology, Jefferson Moss-Magee Rehabilitation and the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Centers.

Dunkin’® Awards $100,000 in Scholarships to Local Students

On Wednesday, August 5th, Dunkin’, in partnership with Scholarship America, will host a special recognition ceremony at Lincoln Financial Field to honor 20 greater Philadelphia-area high school seniors and college students, each awarded a $5,000 academic scholarship. The celebration will take place in Lincoln Financial Field’s FanDuel Lounge and will include food, drinks, giveaways, a stadium tour, photo opportunities, and a special gift and certificate for each recipient, courtesy of the Dunkin’ of Philadelphia local franchisees.

These students are part of Dunkin’s 17th Annual Philadelphia Regional Scholarship Program, which awarded a total of $100,000 in scholarships to 20 students across Southeastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey, and Kent and New Castle counties in Delaware. Selected from a pool of over 2,300 applicants, the 20 Philadelphia recipients will use their scholarships to attend an accredited two or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school beginning this fall.

Established by local franchisees in 2009, the program was open to current undergraduate students and high school seniors. Recipients were selected based on academic excellence, leadership, and dedication to their schools and communities.

Man Sentenced to 10 years for Sexual Assault of a Minor

Saul Sosa, 39, of Deptford, was sentenced to 10 years in state  prison today by the Honorable Russell A. DePersia for second-degree endangering  the welfare of a child by sexual conduct pursuant to a plea agreement.  

According to documents filed in this case and statements made in open court: Sosa repeatedly sexually assaulted an underage female victim between 2015 and  2024. In a statement to the court, he admitted to inappropriately touching the  victim to sexually gratify himself.  

Sosa was originally charged with nine counts, including first-degree aggravated  sexual assault, second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, second-degree  sexual assault of a minor, and both third- and fourth-degree aggravated criminal  sexual conduct. 

Sosa pled guilty to the second-degree charge and was sentenced to 10 years in state  prison, as well as parole supervision for life and registration as a sex offender under  Megan’s Law.

Looking Back and Marching Ahead: Three Years at Taylor’s Mill

“Someone called me and said there were stones in the road. I turned around, told them I was on my way, and asked my husband to grab the camera and meet me at the mill.”

Patricia Fisher-Olsen feared the worst after the Tewksbury earthquake in April 2024. The effort to save Taylor’s Mill was less than a year old: the site had been vandalized, a truck had run into the corner, and now parts of the mill building were lying in the middle of road.

Detectives Investigating Fatal Shooting

Detectives are investigating a stabbing that killed a man in Camden on Saturday, reported Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Camden County Police Chief Gabriel Rodriguez.

On August 1, 2026, at approximately 2:53 a.m., officers from the Camden County Police Department responded to Cooper University Hospital in reference to a stabbing victim who had walked to the hospital and collapsed outside of the parking garage.  The victim, who was identified as 28-year-old Davinne Evans of Camden, was pronounced deceased at approximately 3:49 a.m.Officers subsequently located a crime scene in the area of Broadway and Stevens Street.

The investigation is active and ongoing.  No arrests have been made at this time.
