Governor Shapiro is no longer able to attend today’s WLL Championship at Subaru Park. Media are still welcome to attend. Game time for the WLL Championship is 5 p.m. and will be live on ESPN. Please RSVP via email if you are not already credentialed.

Also, the Philadelphia Waterdogs are currently facing the New York Atlas live on ESPN for a PLL (men’s) regular season matchup before the WLL Championship. The Waterdogs are Philadelphia’s only professional men’s lacrosse team.

DETAILS:       The inaugural Women’s Lacrosse League Championship will make women’s sports history at Subaru Park on Saturday, Aug. 15, as the Maryland Charm and California Palms compete for the league’s first title.

The championship marks the culmination of the WLL’s first full regular season and will feature some of the world’s top women’s lacrosse players, including several with ties to Philadelphia and South Jersey.

The championship comes as the league works with state, local and community partners to expand access to professional women’s lacrosse and introduce more young athletes and families across Pennsylvania to the sport.

In partnership with the Shapiro Administration, the WLL provided 2,500 complimentary tickets to nonprofit organizations, youth programs and community groups across Pennsylvania to attend the championship at Subaru Park.

The City of Philadelphia has proclaimed Saturday, Aug. 15, Women’s Lacrosse League Day in Philadelphia.

 Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro will attend the inaugural Women’s Lacrosse League Championship at Subaru Park on Saturday, Aug. 15, as the Maryland Charm and California Palms compete for the league’s first title.

Governor Shapiro will participate in a media availability at 4:30 p.m. ahead of the championship game, which begins at 5 p.m.

The championship marks the culmination of the WLL’s first full regular season and will feature some of the world’s top women’s lacrosse players, including several with ties to Philadelphia and South Jersey.

Community leaders have organized two protests and marches for Saturday, August 15, and Thursday, August 20, to speak calling out for justice in the case of Kadir Skinner,  the 19-year-old Black teenager who was shot in the back and killed by an officer with the Wilmington Police Department (WPD) in June.

Philadelphia-Area Players Return Home for Inaugural Women’s Lacrosse League Championship on Saturday

The inaugural Women’s Lacrosse League Championship on Aug. 15 at Subaru Park will feature six professional players and one head coach with ties to the Philadelphia and South Jersey lacrosse communities as the Maryland Charm and California Palms compete for the league’s first title. Philadelphia ties include local high school standouts and University of Pennsylvania alumnae. The game begins at 5 p.m., live on ESPN.

For the Maryland Charm, midfielder Olivia Dirks is a native of Wayne, Pennsylvania, and a graduate of Episcopal Academy. Midfielder Cassidy Spilis grew up in Tabernacle, New Jersey, graduated from Seneca High School, and went on to play at Rutgers University. Defender Abby Bosco played collegiately at the University of Pennsylvania and currently resides in New Jersey. Leading the Charm as head coach and general manager is Emily Parros, a Rutledge, Pennsylvania, native and Strath Haven High School graduate.

Summer Ale Festival Returns to Philadelphia Zoo 

Get Ready for a Roaring Good Time with Seasonal Beverages, Food, Brand-New Music Lineup and Animals!

Philadelphia, PA – After being postponed due to severe weather, Summer Ale Festival returns to Philadelphia Zoo bigger and better than ever on Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 6:00-10:00pm (taps close at 9:30pm) with over 100 beers, ciders, seltzers, meads, teas, spirits and non-alcoholic options, which includes 13 new vendors, that will suit any taste. This is the single largest beer event in the Greater Philadelphia Region each summer and this fan-favorite is the only place in the region where you can sip with snow leopards, toast near tigers, and cheers with Andean bears! Performing live this year on the Impala Lawn Stage are Philly-based bands Nik Greeley and the Operators, Echo Kid and Moonroof. This year’s beverage lineup includes newcomers like Ship Bottom Brewery, Good Boy Vodka, Ironbound Cider and NA Beer Club. For tasty bites throughout the night, some of the region’s best local food trucks will be serving up specials to satisfy any appetite. Hours are from 6:00pm to 10:00pm for VIP admission, and 7:00pm to 10:00pm for general admission. All taps will close by 9:30pm. Summer Ale Fest is limited to those 21 or older with valid identification; no children, including infants, permitted.  Tickets are available exclusively through the Zoo’s website and will not be available for purchase at the door. Let’s Work Together to End Drunk Driving!

From August 19 through September 7, 2026, the Lower Township Police Department will be working alongside U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to deter drunk driving and prevent tragedies during the Labor Day holiday weekend. The message is clear: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

Labor Day is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, and unfortunately, it also remains one of the deadliest due to impaired driving. During the 2024 Labor Day holiday period (6 p.m. August 30 through 5:59 a.m. September 3), 505 people were killed in traffic crashes nationwide. Of those fatalities, 170 people (34%) died in crashes involving at least one alcoholimpaired driver with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher.

National Boxing Association to Award Continental Lightweight Championship

Teflon Promotion’s will host their upcoming fight night, RePlay Volume 3, on August 22nd at The Grand Ballroom, 3801 Market Street, with local undefeated boxer Jibril Noble competing for his first world championship. 

Noble, an undefeated lightweight at 9-0 with 7 of the wins coming by knockout will face Wanzell Ellison (11-2-1, 5KO) of Newark, New Jersey for the National Boxing Association’s Continental Lightweight Title.
