Florida Is No. 2 In Nation For Rate Of Uninsured

Florida has the nation’s second-highest rate of uninsured residents younger than 65 — a total of about 3.8 million people, or about 25 percent of the state’s population, including more than 500,000 younger than 19, according to U.S. Census data released Thursday.

And out of all 67 counties in Florida, Miami-Dade has the second-highest rate of uninsured for the same age group at 34.4 percent, trailing only Hendry County, with an uninsured rate of 35 percent or about 11,500 residents. Miami-Dade also is home to the largest number of residents without health insurance in the state younger than 65 — an estimated 744,000 people.

Reporters Should Get Their \”PolitiFacts\” Straight on Obamacare

Does calling a reporter a \”fact checker\” make him or her more even-handed? Hardly.

PolitiFact is a case in point. It is a website of the Tampa Bay Times, manned by journalists and editors. It purports to rule from on high on the veracity of political statements, assigning \”Truth-O-Meter\” ratings that range from True to \”Pants on Fire.\” It is all very droll, or painfully sophomoric, depending on where you stand politically. Studies by George Mason University and the University of Minnesota have concluded that PolitiFact is a biased outfit that is much harsher on conservatives than on liberals.

Last week, PolitiFact decided to rate statements on defunding Obamacare made by Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint at town hall meetings across the country. Well, these are not ratings made last week—PolitiFact just wrote on how it had rated these statements in the past. A bit of a summer rerun.

I checked with one of our top health care experts, Chris Jacobs, and this is what he told me on PolitiFact’s \”ratings\”: \”The claims about ‘debunked’ statements being made on the Defund Obamacare Town Hall tour ignore the actual facts behind those statements.\” Chris makes the following points:

Saturday beating MacAdams Electric 3-2. MacAdams loaded the bases in the 9th inning but was unable to finish the job. The \”Tummy Tees\” have won the tournament in 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012.

An estimated 500 people were in attendance during the day. This year’s event, held at the Joe Barth Field, Browning Road, began at 10am with the 32-team double elimination tournament. The championship game under the lights started at 8pm. During the day Reunion Founder Tom Mac Adams was host to a concert featuring local vocalist Rachel Dickerman, and the Jonathn Ashe Band. Singer Danny Beissel was the closing act. Proceeds from the days event went to the ALS Society.

HOOP STARS!–Members of the 1966/1967 Brooklawn School Basketball team got together on Saturday to watch the tournament and also reminisce about their outstanding team record in 1966 and 1967. In 1966 they were 66-2 and in 1967 they were 36-0 for a total of 102-2. The team was coached by George Holden and Joe \”Pop\” Barth.

As kids head back to school, teachers are crossing their fingers hoping they won’t have to spend hours re-teaching factoids forgotten over summer break. When Congress returns from their six week hiatus on Sept 9, we too are praying they haven’t forgotten an important lesson from the past year—a crisis for farm bill lobbyists isn’t a crisis for farm country.

Going on three years now, apologists for massive federal spending on agriculture have been trying to pass a trillion dollar farm bill. From trying to stuff a backroom brokered bill through the Super Committee, to spinning tales of $8 milk, to underhanded bait and switch tactics (like jamming a subsidy-laden farm bill through the House of Representatives in under 24 hours), they’ve tried every trick in the book to pass a farm bill that squanders savings and creates new income entitlement programs.

Improving care can save more lives

More than 200,000 preventable deaths from heart disease and stroke occurred in the United States in 2010, according to a new Vital Signs report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than half of these deaths happened to people younger than 65 years of age.

The report looked at preventable deaths from heart disease and stroke defined as those that occurred in people under age 75 that could have been prevented by more effective public health measures, lifestyle changes or medical care.

Philadelphia rightly claims one of the finest Catholic educational systems in North America. Catholics across the archdiocese can take pride in its extraordinary achievements, which include, most recently, our 15 schools honored by the U.S. Department of Education for their \”blue ribbon\” excellence.

Mrs. Alice Dick, Gloucester City Softball Coach, Sportsmen\’s AC Ladies Auxiliary Member

On August 30, 2013, (nee Megee), a lifelong resident of Gloucester City, NJ, age 68. She $\"Images-3\"$ was the beloved wife, for 52 years, of Richard Dick, loving mother of Richard (Susan) and Alyson Dick, and dear sister of James Megee (Elaine). She is also survived by her loving grandchildren Timothy, Richard, Nathan, Adam (Ashley), Tabitha, Steven, Nicholas and Emma and great grandchildren Timothy, Andrew, Audrina and Aiden.

The loves of Alice’s life were her home, her grandchildren and the Casinos and also enjoyed bowling. She coached for GloucesterCity Softball for 12 years and was a member of the Sportmen’s AC Ladies Auxiliary. Alice’s family also wanted to mention and are very grateful to the Infusion Nurses at Cooper Medical Center, in Voorhees for the wonderful, loving care they gave Alice.

Relatives and friends are invited to meet Thursday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon at the ETHERINGTON-CRERAN FUNERAL HOME, 700 POWELL ST., GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ. Alice’s Funeral Service will be held 12:00 Noon at the funeral home.
