Gloucester City History May 5, 2005: Educators Celebrate Commencement of New High School Expansion

source press release

Gloucester City (May 5, 2005) – Gloucester City School District celebrated a project kickoff today for construction for an addition and major renovation of Gloucester City Junior-Senior High School as part of a district-wide expansion program. Students, parents, officials and community members were on hand for the ceremony.

The $25 million project includes a 27,000-square-foot addition to the one-story high school on Market Street. It will accommodate an auxiliary gym, a media center accessible to students and the community, locker rooms, science labs, classrooms and other instructional areas. In all, there will be 51 classrooms for 900 students. Work is being done in phases, including upgrades to the heating, ventilation and air-condition system, window replacement and restrooms. Also, replacement of the entire roof, doors, boiler, auditorium seating, electrical and fire alarm system upgrades, and asbestos abatement. The addition and renovation project is planned for completion in September 2006.

District Superintendent Mary T. Stansky said, \”The Gloucester City Board of Education and the community are very pleased that the construction project at

Gloucester City Junior-Senior High School is now proceeding. The renovations and additions will offer our students enhanced opportunities through the creation of a wonderful environment for learning. This project also expands the occasions for the community to engage in life long learning experiences. Gloucester City is grateful to the many people who have tirelessly worked to assure that this project could be realized.\”

The high school project is part of an extensive upgrade of Gloucester City school facilities. Other work includes a new Early Childhood Center that opened last spring at Cold Springs Elementary School, and a new elementary/middle school. All districts schools have been renovated, including the Mary Ethel Costello Elementary School and Highland Park School of Success.

The work is being fully funded and managed by New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation through the State\’s $8.6 billion school construction program.

Gloucester City: Your School Board Members Have No Control on what You (the public) Get to See on Local TV Channel 19

January 16, 2008

Hi Bill,

This Gloucester City Board of Education member would like to set the record straight. The Board of Education has no control over what meetings are shown on the Local cable Channel 19.

When the meeting starts so does the camera. So we are all under the impression that what we say and do is being seen by the people of Gloucester City when aired.

There was a debate among the members and administration as to whether or not we were going to record our meetings beginning with the January meeting. After a long discussion it was decided that we would air the meetings.

Yes the majority of the School Board wanted to dump it but then there were the one\’s that didn\’t want to lose it.

So for better or worst the meetings are back on the local cable channel for now.

We just need to fix the bugs, and maybe now that the meetings will be held at the high school it might get better,

\”A Concerned\”

Gloucester City School Board Member

Letters: Sad to Report \”All Around Al\” Sheain departed this life

See Funeral Arrangements

On Monday January 14, 2008 my side kick at the shop \”all around Al\” Albert F. Sheain departed this life. He went into Cooper Hospital Thursday with respiratory problems and that day apparently died of congestive heart failure.

Ol\’ Al will be missed for his sense of humor, and eagerness to share a story.

I had a photo to add here but it won\’t load from the floppy.

Al was a U.S. NAVY veteran of WWII and Korea, his duty stations numerous and extensive.

Funeral arrangements are being made by his sister and family.

Al would have been 81 next month.
