It is old news to gun owners that New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is not a friend. As one of the leading proponents of new gun laws, Bloomberg has already earned his place in the Second Amendment rights hall of shame. But apparently, Hizzoner does not believe he is doing enough to destroy our rights. 

Of course, as anti-gunners regularly do, Bloomberg ignores the fact that the NRA only has clout because we represent the beliefs of tens of millions of Americans who oppose the anti-gun agenda. Recent polling has repeatedly shown that the majority of Americans support the individual Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

Writer recounts meeting Babe Ruth at a 1947 AL Baseball All-Star Game

On a hot and humid July day in 1947, I was among about 10,000 other kids at Shibe Park, north Philadelphia’s venerable old ballpark. We had been invited to the traveling tribute to baseball legend Babe Ruth, as part of the annual American Legion Baseball All-Star Game. At the time, the Babe was national director of American Legion Baseball. I was among a half- dozen inner-city kids from the YMCA invited to the event.

We arrived by trolley car to a scene that was overwhelming. Thousands were already there. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported, \”Some 10,000 youngsters went wild when an open car drove onto the field and the Babe stepped out. He was greeted at home plate by Connie Mack and addressed the group over the microphone, his voice being surprisingly vibrant and his delight at the rousing reception very apparent … Bundled in his traditional camel’s hair coat, he replied to the gracious speeches and the prayer offered by Cardinal Spellman with a husky, heartbreaking, almost incoherently audible speech about the value of baseball for boys.

Gloucester City String Band will be performing at Proprietor’s Park, King Street and Jersey Avenue on Tuesday, August 18 from 7 PM to 8:15 PM.

The City will also be dedicating a new monument that was recently placed in the park; this monument commemorates the history of the Hugg’s Tavern that was once located on the grounds of Proprietor’s Park.

Mayor and Council invite the public both young and old to join them for a nice evening at the park.

\”Watch the beautiful sunset, enjoy the breeze coming off the Delaware River, visit with friends and listen to some toe tapping music all for Free,\” said Councilwoman Kellie Ferry, Celebrations Committee Chairperson.

\”Some chairs will be provided but if you have a chair we asked you to bring it,\” said the Councilwoman.

My acquaintance wrote to his representative in the General Assembly to learn the procedure for getting the teacher disciplined and the Assembly representative, in turn, asked the Office of Legislative Services (OLS) to set forth the procedure in writing.

The OLS\’s response indicates that there are two mechanisms that a citizen can employ to bring formal action against a tenured teacher:
a) seeking dismissal under N.J.S.A. 18A:6-10, and

 b) pursuing suspension or revocation of the teacher\’s teaching certificate pursuant to N.J.A.C. 6A:9-17.6(a)(8).

I believe that this information from OLS, set forth below, might be of interest to members of the NJLP as well as the general public.

Five Little League Baseball teams on Saturday punched their tickets to South Williamsport, Pa., and the 2009 Little League Baseball World Series.

Four teams from the United States, representing the New England, Midwest, Great Lakes and Northwest Regions, along with Canada’s National Champion, will be making the trip to Little League International and the 63rd World Series, to be played Aug. 21-30.

Urbandale (Iowa) National Little League built a six-run lead, but needed a run-scoring single by Jaran Sabus in the fourth inning to break a tie and win the Midwest Region Championship game, 7-6, over Missouri’s Daniel Boone National Little League Saturday afternoon at Stokely Field in Indianapolis.

Baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra played American Legion baseball in St. Louis.

During World War II, many ballplayers fulfilled their service obligations by taking cushy assignments overseas. Yogi Berra wasn\’t among them; the legendary Hall of Famer served as a gunner\’s mate at the D-Day invasion. Six decades later, the U.S. Navy Memorial is honoring him with the Lone Sailor Award, given annually to former sailors who have used service-learned skills to further their careers and lives.

Berra\’s illustrious baseball career began in St. Louis, where he played American Legion Baseball for Fred W. Stockholm Post 245. He became an all-time great after an 18-year career in New York. But before he was the legendary Yankees catcher and notorious manipulator of the English language, he served aboard an Allied missile boat during the invasion of Normandy in 1944.

Over 60 years later, Berra is being honored for exemplifying the Navy\’s core values.

\”Our honorees are living examples of how service to country changes lives and helps develop leaders,\” Edward Walker Jr., president and Navy Memorial CEO and president, said.

Born in an Italian neighborhood in St. Louis, Berra played for St. Mary\’s High School and in various Legion Baseball leagues. He was once quoted as saying his time as a Legion ballplayer was the best experience he ever had.
