
Gloucester Township, NJ – A Gloucester Township man has been charged in reference to the fatal stabbing of his spouse this morning, announced Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Gloucester Township Police Chief Anthony Minosse.
On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at approximately 2:25 a.m., officers from the Gloucester Township Police Department responded to a residence on the 100 block of Freedom Way in reference to a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers entered the residence and encountered a male suspect, identified as 50-year-old Jerome Morris. Officers observed Jerome Morris was holding a knife and was covered in blood. He was taken into custody.
Officers then located a stabbing victim – identified as 51-year-old Monica Morris – in a third-floor bedroom with heavy fire and smoke conditions. The Erial Fire Department, Gloucester Township Fire District 88, Pine Hill Fire Department, and Winslow Fire Department responded to the scene. Firefighters removed the victim from the residence and extinguished the fire. Monica Morris was pronounced deceased on scene via telemetry at approximately 2:50 a.m. Two additional adult members of the household were able to escape from the fire without injury. Inspira EMS and Virtua paramedics responded and assisted with three Gloucester Township Police officers who suffered minor injuries while inside the residence. Two of the officers were treated on scene and one was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.
Jerome Morris has been charged with first-degree Murder and third-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose. He was transported from the scene to an area hospital and will be remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility, pending a detention hearing.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Camden County Fire Marshal’s Office. Additional charges related to the fire may be filed at a later time, pending the findings of the fire investigation.
