As temperatures rise, don’t forget that asphalt gets much hotter than the air around us. On a 95° day, pavement can reach 143°, and that’s hot enough to burn your dog’s paws in less than a minute.
Before heading out for a walk, try the 7-second hand test. Place the back of your hand on the pavement. If you can’t comfortably keep it there for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws.
Help keep your furry friends safe this summer by:
Walking early in the morning or later in the evening
Choosing grass or shaded trails whenever possible
Checking their paws after walks
Bringing plenty of fresh water and taking breaks in the shade
