Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland announced the successful completion of the inaugural enforcement operation conducted under the newly established Cape May County SHIELD Task Force (Safety on Highways through Intensive Enforcement & Law Enforcement Deployment).
On July 6, 2026, officers from multiple Cape May County law enforcement agencies participated in the SHIELD Traffic Initiative, a countywide, data-driven enforcement effort targeting roadway corridors identified through traffic crash analysis as having historically high rates of fatal and serious motor vehicle crashes. The initiative is designed to reduce dangerous driving behaviors through highly visible enforcement, interagency collaboration, and proactive public safety efforts.
During the four-hour enforcement detail, twelve (12) officers representing multiple municipal police departments were deployed along the North Wildwood Boulevard and Wildwood Boulevard corridors between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
As a result of the operation, officers conducted 93 motor vehicle stops. These Officers issued 48 motor vehicle summonses, 25 moving violations and 23 non-moving violations. Additionally, one individual was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated.
“The SHIELD Task Force represents a collaborative commitment by law enforcement throughout Cape May County to make our roadways safer for everyone who lives, works, and vacations here,” said Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland. “Rather than reacting to tragedy, SHIELD allows us to proactively deploy officers to locations where crash data tells us enforcement can have the greatest impact. This first operation demonstrates the effectiveness of agencies working together with one common goal—preventing crashes, saving lives, and improving the safety of our communities.”
Chief of County Detectives Dan Holt, who oversees the operational coordination of the SHIELD Task Force, emphasized the importance of using intelligence and data to guide enforcement efforts. “SHIELD is not about issuing tickets for the sake of enforcement,” said Chief Holt. “It is about strategically placing officers in areas where traffic crash data indicates the greatest need for intervention. By increasing law enforcement visibility and addressing dangerous driving behaviors before they result in tragedy, we are working to reduce fatalities and serious injuries throughout Cape May County.”
The SHIELD Task Force was established by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office as a countywide partnership involving municipal police departments, the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office, the New Jersey State Police, and other law enforcement partners. The initiative utilizes crash statistics, traffic enforcement data, and seasonal traffic patterns to identify high-risk locations and coordinate targeted enforcement operations throughout the year. These efforts are complemented by public education and outreach designed to encourage safe and responsible driving.
The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office extends its appreciation to all participating agencies and officers whose professionalism and cooperation contributed to the success of the inaugural SHIELD enforcement detail.
Additional SHIELD operations will continue throughout Cape May County as part of an ongoing commitment to reducing traffic fatalities, promoting voluntary compliance with New Jersey’s motor vehicle laws, and ensuring the safety of residents and the millions of visitors who travel Cape May County’s roadways each year.
