Meg Ryan had three hits and Gloucester erupted for 15 runs in defeating Haddon Township for the South Jersey Group I softball title –But Madison Chain certainly provided an exclamation point.
Chain blasted a two-run home run over the center field fence to invoke the mercy rule and power the Lions to a 15-4 win over Haddon Township and a sectional championship.
It’s Gloucester’s seventh sectional title since 2000. The Lions will take aim at their fifth state title starting June 5 against Central Jersey champion New Egypt, the two-time defending state champion and same team that ousted Gloucester in the same round, 10-0, last year.

Chain reaction as Gloucester High wins 11th sectional crown
GLOUCESTER CITY — The Gloucester City High School softball team did it again.
The Lions won their 11th overall sectional crown and second straight on Friday afternoon in a dominating 15-4 victory over Haddon Township in the South Jersey Group 1 final.
The game ended in the bottom of the sixth inning when Gloucester freshman pitcher/second baseman Maddy Chain slammed a walk-off, two-run home run over the center-field fence in convincing fashion.
Chain, who had five RBIs on the day, brought in Meg Ryan (single) on her blast, and ended the game an inning early with the 10-run rule.
