
Effective November 1, 2025, Chief David Harkins retired from the Gloucester Township Police Department after serving 30 years and 7 months of honorable service as a Police Officer!
Chief Harkins was hired as a full time Gloucester Township Police Officer on April 3, 1995. Chief Harkins served as a Patrol Officer, School Programs Officer, Field Training Officer, Patrol Shift Investigator and was temporarily assigned to the Narcotics Unit on October 10, 2001. Chief Harkins was appointed to the Special Response Team on April 6, 1999, and later appointed as Team Commander on February 1, 2006 until February 1, 2010.
Chief Harkins was promoted to Sergeant of Police on January 1, 2002 serving as a Deputy Platoon Commander in the Patrol Bureau. On September 8, 2004 Chief Harkins was promoted to Lieutenant of Police serving as a Platoon Commander in the Patrol Bureau until June 30, 2006 when he was later assigned to the Administrative Services Division as the Communications / Technical Services / Police Records Supervisor. Chief Harkins was promoted to Captain of Police on February 18, 2010 and assigned as the Operations Division Commander. On October 25, 2010 Chief Harkins was promoted to Deputy Chief of Police assigned as the Staff Commander, and promoted to Chief of Police on October 30, 2019. Chief Harkins is a graduate of the 247th Session of the FBI National Academy and was awarded as the 2001 Gloucester Township “Police Officer of the Year.”
