
John R. Atkinson, Sr., age 95, of the Glen Oaks section of Gloucester Township, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at home on May 24, 2026. He was born on April 3, 1931, in Bellmawr, New Jersey, and lived a wonderful life marked by devotion to family, service to his country, and many years of hard work and fellowship.
He was the beloved son of the late Ethel (nee Morgan) and John Atkinson. He was also predeceased by his siblings, the late Cyril and Margaret (Joe), and he is remembered with love by his extended family and all who knew him.
John was a dedicated husband to Shirley (nee Haug) and together they built a life centered on family, love, and lasting memories. He was the proud father of John, Jr. (Betty), Alan (Patty), Brian, Kevin (Sue), Kathleen (the late Elmer), Donna Jean (Jim), Cindy, Chip (Pam) and Shirley. He was also the cherished grandfather of 34 grandchildren and the proud great-grandfather of 30 great-grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who will remember his warm presence and thoughtful nature.
For many years, John was a longtime employee of Owens Corning Fiberglass in Barrington, New Jersey, where he was known for his strong work ethic and dependable character. He also served his nation as a Sergeant in the United States Army and as a reservist, with a combined service of over 35 years. Those who knew him best remember a man who was loving, kind, and thoughtful, and who approached life with quiet strength and genuine care for others.
John especially loved spending time with his family, and some of his happiest memories came from family vacations when his children were young. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and found joy in bowling, where he was an avid competitor. He also enjoyed golfing and appreciated time spent outdoors and in good company. His dogs held a special place in his heart as well, including the late Bear, and Brady who survives him.
John R. Atkinson, Sr. will be remembered as a devoted family man, a faithful husband, a proud veteran, and a respected member of his community. His life was one of service, love, and enduring connection, and his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Visitation for family and friends will be Friday, June 5,2026, 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM, with a service beginning at 1:00 PM, all at Earle Funeral Home, 122 W. Church St., Blackwood, NJ 08012. Inurnment will follow the service at St. Joseph’s Cemetery Mausoleum, Black Horse Pike and Olympic Ave., Chews Landing, Blackwood, NJ.
In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory would be appreciated to the Voorhees Animal Orphanage.
