The $38.3 million budget will force layoffs of about 45 teachers and guidance counselors as well as 25 aides, custodians, security and support personnel, Superintendent Mary T. Stansky said.
The district will also eliminate summer school, a counseling program for students and families, all field trips and assemblies, building repairs and textbook purchases, Stansky said.
The spending plan will prevent the district from adhering to reforms mandated under state Supreme Court rulings designed to ensure that children in high-poverty districts like Gloucester City receive an adequate education, Stansky added.Read More
