Clermont, FL… The College of New Jersey softball team earned its first win of the season on Sunday as the Lions posted a five-inning 10-0 shutout over Daniel Webster College. That win came after the Lions started the day with a 4-1 loss at the hands of Penn State Behrend.
TCNJ\’s spring trip continues on Monday with a doubleheader against Ripon College. The Lions are 1-3 on the young season.
Penn State Behrend 4, TCNJ 1
Penn State Behrend scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to break open a 1-1 tie as they finished the game scoring three of its four runs unearned.
TCNJ scored its run in the top of the fifth as Kathy Sikora (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) singled and later scored on an error.
Sophomore pitcher Ashley Minervini (Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) had her second straight solid outing allowing only two hits over five innings, but suffered the loss the for Lions.
TCNJ 10, Daniel Webster College 0 (Five innings)
Freshman Alex Sietsma (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) picked up her first collegiate victory going 4-1/3 innings with classmate Jamie Moir (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) recording the final two outs as the duo combined on the five-inning no-hitter. Sietsma finished with nine strikeouts and Moir added a pair.
The Lions got all of the offense they would need in the first as senior Christina Lizzi (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) belted a two-run homer and Lauren Musacchia (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) drove in two more runs with a double.
TCNJ added another run in the bottom of the second and then doubled its lead in the last of the fourth scoring five times.
Danielle Hagel (Egg Harbor City, NJ/Oakcrest), Ellen Seavers (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood), Colleen Cawley (Riverton, NJ/Holy Cross) and Sietsma each finished with two hits.
