Consumer Safety Alert: Fake Squishy Toys

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning consumers about fake and counterfeit squishy toys that may pose serious risks to children. CPSC is also reiterating its warning about serious burn hazards associated with a viral social media trend encouraging children and teens to microwave squishy toys.

Squishy toys — including popular animal, food, and character-shaped squeeze toys — are widely sold through online marketplaces, social media, discount stores, and other retailers. CPSC is aware of fake and counterfeit versions that do not comply with federal safety requirements for children’s toys, including requirements addressing water beads, small parts, lead, phthalates, and other hazardous substances.

Delsea Drive/Route 47 alternating traffic Friday night in Deptford

 Delsea Drive/Route 47 is scheduled to have a single lane closed overnight near Bennet Drive tonight with traffic maintained using an alternating traffic pattern as a corridor improvement project advances in Deptford, Gloucester County.

Beginning at 9 p.m. tonight, Friday, August 7 until 6 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, August 8, a single lane is scheduled to be closed on Delsea Drive/Route 47 near Bennett Drive. The lane closure is necessary to restripe the roadway, place barrier and shift traffic. Alternating traffic will be maintained overnight.

Rowan’s Student-Athletes Honored 

Rowan’s Mikayla Dansky (softball) and Johnny Troiano (men’s soccer) have been named to the 2025-26 NJAC All-Academic First Team with Nick Struble (baseball) and Jenna O’Neill (women’s lacrosse) being selected to the All-Academic Second Team. Those Profs are joined by 190 Rowan student-athletes who earned NJAC All-Academic Honorable Mention for the 2025-26 academic year.

Fishermen and Boaters: Avoid Trouble, Steer Clear of Bubbles

NOAA Fisheries reminds all fishermen and boaters to keep a safe distance from whales. Whales can get hooked in tuna rigs or tangled in monofilament lines. Recently, the Atlantic Large Whale Disentanglement Network has received a number of reports of fishermen trolling their gear too close to humpback whales. This can result in injuries to both the whales and the people.

Phillies Legends Step Up for Charity

Sluggball, a new baseball-inspired hitting competition, will host its inaugural All-Star Classic featuring retired Phillies legends in a fast-paced 4-on-4 exhibition – no fielding, no baserunning, just hitting.

Charlie Manuel and Larry Bowa will manage the two competing teams that feature Cole Hamels, Mike Lieberthal, Joe Blanton, Aaron Rowand, Kenny Lofton, Mickey Morandini and Sluggball co-founder Ruben Amaro Jr.

Each batter gets eight swings or 35 seconds per at-bat, aiming for designated zones of the field (pull side, up the middle, opposite field, around the horn).

Proceeds of the event will benefit The Darren Daulton Foundation and the Ruben Amaro Sr. Foundation.

Traffic Advisory

The long-term left lane closures on Route 322 eastbound and westbound will remain in place through Friday, August 21 in Logan Township, Gloucester County. The left lane closures were scheduled to reopen Tuesday, August 11 but have been extended due to inclement weather and other factors.

In addition, the work zones on Route 322 eastbound and westbound have been expanded to improve safety for crews. The original work zone at mile post 3.9 has now been expanded from mile post 3.7 to mile post 4.1.

Route 44 Bridge Closed to Marine Traffic Due to Heat

 The Route 44 Bridge over Mantua Creek between West Deptford and Paulsboro, Gloucester County was taken out of service for marine traffic last night because of excessive heat. Route 44/Crown Point Road remains open for vehicles.

The excessive heat has caused the expansion of some components on the bridge, which prohibits the bridge from opening to allow marine traffic to pass. In the closed position, the bridge has 2 feet of clearance over mean high water. Vessels that can transit safely under the bridge may do so. The United States Coast Guard has been notified.
