In a joint study by the University of Haifa and the Israel Antiquities Authority at the Byzantine city of Halutza (Elusa), 1,500 year-old grape seeds originating from the Negev Desert have been found for the first time. This variety of grape did not survive to present days. \”Our next task is to recreate the ancient wine and perhaps we will then be able to reproduce its taste and understand what made the wine of the Negev so fine,\” said the excavation director, Prof. Guy Bar-Oz of the University

Newswise — For the first time, grape seeds from the Byzantine era have been found. These grapes were used to produce \”the Wine of the Negev\” — one of the finest and most renowned wines in the whole of the Byzantine Empire. The charred seeds, over 1,500 years-old, were found at the Halutza excavation site in the Negev during a joint dig by the University of Haifa and the Israel Antiquities Authority. \”The vines growing in the Negev today are European varieties, whereas the Negev vine was lost to the world. Our next job is to recreate the ancient wine, and perhaps in that way we will be able to reproduce its taste and understand what made the Negev wine so fine,\” said Prof. Guy Bar-Oz of the University of Haifa, director of the excavation.

George Joseph Rieder Sr. – 78, of New Bern, (NC) died peacefully February 10, 2015 at his
home. 

He was predeceased by his parents Bernard and Mary Rieder and his brother Bernard Rieder. 

He is survived by his wife of 39 years Patricia (aka Honey), five children, Michelle Hickman(Mark) of Hubert NC, Donna Sacilowski of Summerville, SC, Margaret Rose Rieder of Charleston SC, Kathleen Rieder (Jeff) of Charleston and George Rieder Jr. of Gloucester City, NJ, five grandchildren, Shannon Roman (Jared)of Okinawa Japan, Jennifer Thompson of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Matthew Sacilowski of Summerville SC, Annie Sacilowski of Summerville, SC, and Candice Harrington of New Bern, NC, four great grandchildren, Tristan Thompson, Denissa Roman, Carrington Roman and Mark Benjamin Roman, nephew Brian Rieder (Sari)of Lake Worth, FL., and Princess Mandy Rieder.

On February 13, 2015. Age 88. Of Gloucester City. Formerly of Swedesboro. Predeceased by his wife of 35 years Nancy M. Capri; his parents, Rosario and Eleanor Capri; his sister Alfina Leone and his brother Salvatore Capri. Survived by his daughters, Cheryl Sheets (Edward) and Cindy DiDomenico; his grandchildren Christina Sheets Busan (Albert), Pamela Sheets Johnson (William), Lisa Sheets Rice (Daniel), Alexandria DiDomenico and Christopher DiDomenico; 6 great-grandchildren and his brother Russell Capri (Lucy). Frank proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Department answers call for assistance

The latest insult: President Obama and the Federal Communications Commission are going to take over the Internet on February 26th if we don’t do everything we can do to stop them right now. 

A plan deceivingly referred to as \”Net Neutrality,\” involves declaring the Internet a \”public utility\” and gives the FCC the power to decide what Internet service providers can charge and how they operate. This is not only a direct attack on the free market, but it will also result in an increase in Internet access fees for millions of consumers in America.
