Assembly Committee Advances Mental Health Crisis Response Legislation for New Jersey Youth

As youth mental health challenges continue to rise across New Jersey and the nation, two bills to strengthen suicide prevention efforts and improve crisis response were advanced by the Assembly Children, Families, and Food Security Committee today.

“Too many children today are quietly struggling, and we have a responsibility as both Legislators, and as parents to make sure our systems are equipped to recognize those warning signs and respond,” said Assemblywoman Andrea Katz (D-Atlantic, Burlington). “Behind every parent’s worst nightmare is a child who felt alone and a family left wondering whether more could have been done, or whether one moment of intervention might have changed what can no longer be changed.”

Philadelphia CBP Seizes ‘Blue Nitro’ GBL

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized a half gallon of gamma-butyrolactone, known on the street and at raves as “Blue Nitro” or liquid ecstasy, in Philadelphia on April 25.

The two parcels arrived from Barcelona, Spain manifested as “skincare essential oils and resino” and were destined to the same address in Everett, Mass. CBP officers inspected the two parcels and discovered a combined eight small bottles labeled “Tonico Facial Calmiante,” which translates to soothing facial toner. Officers tested the clear liquid in those bottles using a handheld elemental isotope analysis tool and identified the liquid as GBL.

Public Health Alert for Headcheese Deli Meat Products

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is issuing a public health alert for headcheese that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes (Lm). A recall was not requested because the products are no longer available for purchase. Headcheese is a ready-to-eat (RTE), pork deli meat product typically made from meat and seasonings that are cooked together and formed into a loaf or jelly-style product.

Juveniles Arrested for Home and Vehicle Burglaries

On Friday, May 8, 2026, at approximately 7:58 p.m., officers from the Gloucester Township Police Department (GTPD) were dispatched to the area of Pine Glen Drive in the Sicklerville section of Gloucester Township for the report of three juveniles burglarizing a residence and attempting to steal a vehicle.

An alert neighbor observed three subjects wearing ski masks enter a residence, immediately contacted police, and continued providing real-time information to responding officers. The three males exited the residence carrying numerous items and proceeded to a vehicle in an attempt to steal it and flee the area. The subjects entered the vehicle but were unsuccessful in starting it, causing them to flee on foot.

Responding officers located the suspects fleeing, pursued them on foot, and successfully took all three individuals into custody. The suspects were identified as juveniles, transported to GTPD Headquarters, charged on juvenile complaints, and remanded to a juvenile detention center.

Rutgers–Newark Partners on Citywide Public Art Exhibition

Rutgers University–Newark has partnered with New Arts, a public arts studio at Express Newark, to present a citywide art exhibition featuring archival photographs of Newark in the 1980s created by the multidisciplinary artist Manuel Acevedo across the city’s five wards.

The exhibition will kick off with an opening program Tuesday, May 12, at 5:30 p.m. at 5 Linden Street in the Central Ward. Afterward, guests can attend a guided tour of installations throughout the city’s five wards, with transportation provided. The event will also include light refreshments and live music.

Trump to Deliver Coast Guard Academy Commencement Address

The President of the United States Donald J. Trump will deliver the keynote address during graduation ceremonies at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday, May 20. The President will congratulate the cadets, the newest generation of military leaders for the Coast Guard, on their hard work and dedication.

The 145th Commencement Exercises are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. on Cadet Memorial Field. This event is not open to the public. Inclement weather plans call for the ceremony to be held in Leamy Hall Auditorium, where seating will be limited.
