NJNG Starts Pipeline Construction In Monmouth County

New Jersey Natural Gas has started construction on their Southern Reliability Link pipeline in Monmouth County. The pipeline is being installed on Province Line Road off of route 537 which is now closed to traffic. NJNG have put plastic fencing to protect the 300 year-old cemetery across the street on Arneytown-Hornerstown Road.

“NJNG is starting construction again in Monmouth County near New Egypt on the SRL pipeline. They are now heading into Burlington County despite the fact that we are still in court with them. They are taking open space and a historic cemetery for an unnecessary pipeline. The NJ Sierra Club is filing a response to briefs to the state and NJNG. Our concern is that we won’t have an oral argument until June or maybe even October. By the time the case is decided that the pipeline cannot be built, a majority of it will be in the ground. This pipeline will cause irreparable harm to the environment and become an economic burden to taxpayers who will have to pay to remove it. NJNG is heading towards Burlington County and it is critical that the Burlington Freeholders commit to blocking this pipeline,”

said Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club.

NJNG’s Southern Reliability Link will have to get approval from Burlington County for permits. The Burlington County Freeholders have the power and the justification to deny road occupancy permits for NJNG’s planned use of county roads for the pipeline. Groups are asking the Freeholder to deny NJNG’s permit to build along its county roads.

“This is a dastardly deed by NJNG. They aren’t just proceeding at their own risk; they’re risking the environment and public safety, and ratepayer’s money. That is why the Burlington County Freeholders must protect their community! NJNG is completely ignoring the rules and the role of the legal system and going ahead with their unnecessary pipeline. There will be irreparable harm by allowing for construction, digging up people’s lawn, and putting a blowtorch within feet of homes. NJNG is already cutting streets off in Monmouth and Ocean County and people cannot get to their homes. They are risking public safety by blocking traffic which is especially difficult for emergency vehicles. Burlington Freeholders need to step up and protect their residents by rejecting NJNG, they need to stop this pipeline so that we have our day in court,”

said Tittel.

The proposed Southern Reliability Link (SRL) pipeline would connect to a compressor station in Chesterfield and run 28 miles of pipe through Burlington, Monmouth, and Ocean Counties. The line would threaten ecosystems, communities, and drinking water in the Pinelands. This pipeline clearly violates the Pinelands rules because this type of infrastructure is only allowed through the Pinelands Forest Preservation Area, if it primarily serves the Pinelands, but it does not.

“The SRL would be detrimental to the Pinelands is the largest open space on the eastern seaboard and recognized for its biodiversity by the United Nations. It is also the country’s first National Reserve and holds 17 trillion gallons of water in its aquifer. We have been trying to get a stay on the SRL but that has fell on deaf ears. The New Jersey Attorney General said he represents the agencies such as the Pinelands and the BPU, but they are in support of the pipeline. This is no longer Chris Christie’s pipeline, this is Phil Murphy’s pipeline. That is why we are asking the Burlington County Freeholders to protect the Pinelands and deny NJNG’s SRL pipeline,”

If Governor Murphy is committed to reducing GHG’s and clean energy, why is he letting NJNG come through his own county for a destructive fossil fuel pipeline. That’s why a moratorium is so important. There is no need for the SRL pipeline other than to promote fracking and the burning of fossil fuels that impact clean water and promote climate change.”

Rutgers University-Camden baseball team received strong pitching, a milestone performance and broke open a tie game with a five-run seventh inning on the way to an 8-2 victory here Monday at Ursinus College.

The win was the third in two days for the Scarlet Raptors, who swept a doubleheader from Oneonta Sunday, have now won four straight games and stand at 4-1 overall.

It was the season opener for Ursinus.

The $2,800-a-head event was followed by a rally featuring the big-ticket Democrats.

“When I need help on the other side of the capitol for raising the minimum wage, for protecting retirement security, for making sure that working conditions are not so perverse that sexual harassment reigns in the workplace like we see in corporations like the McDonald’s, the champion of workers’ rights in the House that I turn to is Donald Norcross.” Booker said.

President Donald Trump’s name frequently came up during the rally, which lasted for roughly an hour.

Booker, Norcross and Murphy each attacked Trump and members of his administration, with Booker lending specific focus to Attorney General William Barr and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.

“Nothing compares to this. When we say god bless America, what are we talking about in America? we’re talking about America, our constitution, our rights, our liberties, our republic, our separation of power,” Pelosi told the crowd of about 900. “They are dishonoring our constitution.”

Diocesan FaithFULL Food Drive set for March 22

The Camden Diocesan-wide FaithFULL Food Drive will be held on Sunday, March 22, and Catholics throughout South Jersey have already begun collecting food items in their parishes, schools and homes.

Through this annual charitable event, Catholic Charities and other local food pantries will be able to fill their shelves once again, especially after donations stagnate during the months following the holidays.

The campaign is held for multiple purposes, according to Matthew Davis, director of the Office of Life and Justice Ministries, who is leading the initiative.

“We hope to raise awareness about people locally who struggle with food insecurity, and we hope to join together as a church family to collect as much food as possible for those affected by this hardship,” he explained. “The FaithFULL food drive is also a concrete and practical way for us to be faithful to the Gospel’s call of solidarity and concern for the least of those among us. This is a joyful occasion where we do good and have fun while doing it,” he added.

“Food insecurity” refers to the USDA’s measure of lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members. It also includes having limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods.

Currently, in Camden County alone, there are 17,200 food-insecure children, 24% of whom are ineligible for federal nutrition programs. Overall in Camden County, the total food-insecure population is more than 60,000 individuals.

The statistics for food insecurity in South Jersey’s other counties are equally sobering. Gloucester County is home to 8,180 food-insecure children in a total food-insecure population of 26,860 individuals. Suffering the impact of rural hunger are more than 8,000 food insecure individuals in the less populated farmlands of Salem County — most of whom living more than 10 miles from the nearest grocery store.

“Many households still need to make trade-offs between food and other important basic needs, such as housing or medical bills,” explained Cristina Chillem, program director at Catholic Charities. “Many households are still just one paycheck away from financial crisis.”

So when people come to one of the eight offices of Catholic Charities throughout the diocese seeking food, they often leave with much more.

According to Chillem, “In addition to bags of food staples, these clients are also able to learn about and access additional services right there on the spot, like financial coaching, housing counseling, employment assistance and more.

That’s the beauty of being a multi-service agency; we are able to help pantry clients sort out the issues that lead them to food insecurity,” she said.

She added that Catholic Charities is also able to provide educational programs which teach clients how to shop healthy on a budget and assist them in applying for SNAP benefits, crediting the support from the Walmart Foundation and the Salem Health and Wellness Foundation.

NJ State Trooper Charged with Allegedly Receiving Child Porn from Another Trooper

TRENTON — A State Police trooper faces criminal charges after she allegedly received images of child pornography in a sexually explicit text exchange with another trooper.

Andrea V. Knox, of Mount Holly, failed to report her fellow trooper had shared child pornography, “despite her duty as a police officer to enforce and uphold the laws,” the state Attorney General’s Office said Tuesday.

Knox, 35, was charged Tuesday with official misconduct and possession of child pornography, the agency said in a statement. Knox, who is assigned to Troop D at the Moorestown station, has been suspended, the statement said.

The other trooper, Jeffrey Reitz of Williamstown, was charged with distribution of child pornography.

Reitz, 48, previously was indicted in December 2019 on two counts of possession of child pornography. Those charges were related to a separate exchange of texts with a different woman, the statement said.

“During those exchanges, the woman proposed that Reitz sexually assault a young girl and sent him a sexually explicit photo of the girl,” the Attorney General’s Office said.

It had described the girl as the woman’s 5-year-old daughter.

A criminal complaint in that case alleges Reitz responded to the child’s photo by texting “NICE!” and making a reference to sexual arousal.

That exchange occurred in December 2014, but investigators only learned of the images when the mother’s phone was seized “much later” during a separate investigation of the Gloucester City woman.

Additional images of alleged child pornography were found in an iCloud account that belonged to Reitz, the statement said.

Further investigation of the iCloud account revealed alleged text exchanges between the troopers that allegedly included sexually explicit conversations about an underage girl, it said.

According to the statement, Knox asked Reitz for details about sex acts he’d like to perform on the child during a text exchange on Aug. 27, 2018.

“The following day, the pair had another sexually explicit text exchange, during which Reitz sent Knox photos of people at a nudist location,” the statement said.

The images included photos of two exposed girls, it said.

“Knox failed to report that Reitz shared items of child pornography with her,” the statement said.

Reitz has been suspended since his arrest in April 2019.

The troopers were charged after an investigation by the Financial and Cyber Crimes Bureau of the state’s Division of Criminal Justice.
