New Jersey Bears, Are a Nuisance & Dangerous

I went to my oldest daughter\’s for dinner with her and her husband to celebrate her birthday Thursday night. She lives south of Lake Hopatcong.

\"012608_2051_LettersToda1\" After I left, she went to the store, then pulled into the driveway at 9:45 p.m. She saw a huge bear that had tipped her garbage can on the side of the house and was carrying a bag of garbage into the backyard. She leaned on the horn, but bear was nonchalant, took the bag and was eating its contents beside her pool.

Her husband also saw it. Said it was on all fours the bear\’s back was higher than the trunk of one of their cars. She called local police and the cop who came saw the bear at 10:15 p.m., he said he couldn\’t do anything about it. A bear has to break into her house, cause a lot of damage or hurt her dog before anyone can do anything. She\’s seen five wild bears before, one other in the yard, but never one this big.
