Lions topple York to win Coaches vs. Cancer Classic
York, PA… Three, consecutive three-pointers to open the second half propelled The College of New Jersey women’s basketball team to a 64-49 triumph over York (PA) College in the Hampton Inn Coaches vs. Cancer Classic hosted by York.
Holding a 28-23 halftime lead, sophomore Hannah Tait (Staten Island, NY/Notre Dame Academy), senior Karen Lassoni (East Rutherford, NJ/Becton Regional), and junior Keri Washington (Ewing, NJ/Pennington Prep) drained shots from long range as the Lions (6-6, -02 NJAC) delivered a knockout punch less than two minutes after the break. The Spartans never fully recovered as TCNJ’s active defense wreaked havoc on the tournament host.
York (5-5, 1-1) cut the lead to eight points with 16:31 remaining, but Tait hit her next three shots to spark a 9-1 run to extend the Lions lead to 16 points.
Tait led all scorers with 14 points and also grabbed seven boards. Junior Kelsey Kutch
