Bellmawr Council Remembers Borough Employee Star Coleman

By Chris Concannon

Gloucester City News

(reprinted from GCN August 2 issue)As the July 26th Bellmawr Council Meeting got underway, a hero emerged from the Borough’s civilian ranks.

A CPR class recently held by the Bellmawr Fire Department proved extremely valuable for one of its attendees.

Bellmawr resident Ryan McColligan, who took the class along with dozens of others, was dining at the Pub in Pennsauken recently (see related article in last week’s Gloucester City News), and noticed a nearby patron in distress.

Mc Colligan immediately recognized the gentleman was choking, and, remembering what he learned in the free class, performed the Heimlich maneuver, thereby saving him from imminent danger.

As an outreach for anyone wishing to learn CPR and Heimlich techniques, the Department will hold another class in the fall.

Those dates and times will be released as soon as provided by BFD officials.

The outset of the evening’s meeting began with moments of silence observed both for the victims of the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado, along with marking the passing of Starr Coleman, a long-time Borough employee, who bravely fought, yet sadly lost her battle with cancer.

Starr is the wife of George Coleman, current Superintendent for the Bellmawr Sewer Department.

A thank you letter was read from Megan Dyson, Bell Oaks Class of 2012, thanking the Borough for receiving the Anthony P. Infanti Award at the Commencement ceremonies June 12.
