This work is part of a $73.2 million federally funded bridge replacement and pavement improvement project in Camden and Gloucester City, Camden County. The project will replace the I-76/I-676 Bridge over the Main Branch of Newton Creek, the I-676 southbound Bridge over the Main Branch of Newton Creek and the I-76 Bridge over Nicholson Road. In addition, the project will improve safety and pavement conditions on I-76 and I-676, as well as replace noise barriers, upgrade drainage, update sign structures and install intelligent transportation systems (ITS) throughout the corridor.
Work for this project will begin with drainage improvements, with the majority of construction expected to take place off the roadway. In some instances, a shoulder closure may be required to continue with drainage improvements. Construction of precast bridge deck panels is expected to begin later this year and will take place off-site. Replacement of the bridge decks are expected to begin in 2026 and will require lane closures. NJDOT will provide advanced notification of any traffic impacts prior to work taking place.
Variable Message Signs will provide advance notification to motorists of traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
Route 70 is scheduled to have single lane closures in both directions beginning Monday and continuing for approximately four months between Haddonfield Road/Grove Street/CR 644 in Cherry Hill and Route 38 in Pennsauken, Camden County.
Beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, April 20 until 3 p.m. Friday, April 24 and continuing weekly Monday through Friday at the same time for approximately four months, a single lane on Route 70 eastbound and westbound is scheduled to be closed from Haddonfield Road/Grove Street/CR 644 to Route 38. The single lane closures are necessary to restore the median, including concrete curb and landscaping work. At least two lanes will be maintained in each direction during the week. All lanes will be open over the weekend. Exceptions include where long-term lane closures are in place. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays when driving through the work zone.
The work is part of a $153 million state-funded Route 70 corridor safety and improvement project that will improve gas and watermains, upgrade traffic signals at 27 intersections, replace or install four Dynamic Message Signs, improve drainage, sidewalks, and resurface approximately 9 miles of Route 70 between Route 38 in Cherry Hill and Cooper Avenue in Evesham. In addition to milling and paving Route 70, the North Maple Avenue loop ramps and the Route 70/Route 73 interchange ramps will be repaved as well. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
