Anglers of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate in the Garden State Surf Fishing Classic, the state’s premier fishing tournament being held this Sunday, May 17, at Island Beach State Park in Ocean County.

The annual tournament brings awareness to New Jersey’s rich cultural heritage of recreational saltwater fishing and the importance of protecting the state’s marine resources. The popular family event allows participants to hone their surf fishing skills while competing for the ultimate catch. Registration begins at 5 a.m. for those who are not pre-registered. Fishing will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Acting Commissioner Potosnak will participate in the tournament awards ceremony at 2 p.m.

“The Garden State Surf Fishing Classic is a wonderful event that highlights the excellent saltwater fishing available in New Jersey,” said Acting Commissioner Potosnak. “The tournament gives anglers a chance to bond while learning more about the exciting sport of surf fishing, a cherished pastime in our state. Come join us on Sunday to reel in some lasting memories with friends and family.”

The angler who catches the longest fish will win the Governor’s Award and have their name engraved on the Governor’s Cup. The Cup is permanently displayed at Island Beach State Park. They will also receive a plaque along with a prize fishing rod and reel. Prizes will be given to winners in a variety of age groups and fish species categories as well.

The tournament includes categories for military veterans and teams of high school students. The High School Team Category is designed for students who are part of a formal fishing club, members of a Hooked on Fishing-Not on Drugs group, or a non-formal group.

“We anticipate hundreds of anglers of all ages from New Jersey and neighboring states will participate and spend a fun day of fishing,” said NJDEP Fish & Wildlife Assistant Commissioner Dave Golden. “The event also provides a great opportunity to enjoy our beautiful beaches and celebrate the upcoming summer season at the Jersey shore.”

All fish entered in the tournament must meet minimum length requirements. In addition, anglers are encouraged to help protect our marine resources by using lead-free tackle and circle hooks whenever possible, properly disposing of fishing line and trash, reviewing the state’s fishing regulations and using safe handling practices for releasing fish.

The Garden State Surf Fishing Classic is sponsored by NJDEP Fish & Wildlife, New Jersey State Parks, New Jersey State Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs, Jersey Coast Anglers Association, and New Jersey Beach Buggy Association.

“Everything is coming together and excitement is building for the 35th annual Garden State Surf Fishing Classic,” said Gary Conk, President of the Tournament Committee and Chairman of Trustees with the NJ Beach Buggy Association. “There was a lot of excitement with many fish caught last year, and I look forward to seeing everyone on the beach again this year enjoying a day of fishing and friendly competition.”

The registration fee on the day of the tournament is $20 for anglers aged 18 and older and $5 for ages 13 to 17. Staff will only be accepting cash or checks. There is no fee for children aged 12 and under, and student teams. Admission to the park is free for all registrants.

All funds raised by the tournament are used to improve beach access, construct access ramps for disabled saltwater anglers, support surf fishing instruction programs, and develop marine education and restoration projects.

Prior to arriving at the event, all anglers must complete the NJ Saltwater Recreational Registry. Registration is free.
