BROOKLAWN, NJ (July 19, 2026)(CNBNews)— James “Jim” DiAmore, age 77, longtime pharmacist and friend to generations of residents, passed away on July 15, 2026, following a long illness. Jim was a unique personality — blunt, direct, and sometimes misunderstood by those who didn’t know him well. But beneath that gruff exterior was a man defined by generosity, loyalty, and quiet compassion.
A Life of Service to His Community
Jim devoted decades of service to the Brooklawn Fire Department, often driving the ambulance and responding to emergency calls late at night. He supported local police, youth sports teams, and was frequently the first to offer financial help to Brooklawn and Gloucester City residents who had fallen on hard times. He didn’t talk about the good he did; he simply did it.
If a storm was forecast, Jim would deliver an elderly patron’s prescription even when the roads were too hazardous to drive. He believed that caring for people didn’t end at the pharmacy counter.
A Soft Spot for Animals
Outside of work, Jim had a deep affection for animals. He fed feral cats every day, rain
or shine, making sure they were never forgotten. His kindness extended to the smallest creatures, reflecting a gentleness that those close to him knew well.
A Family Pharmacy With Heart
Lipkins Pharmacy was truly a family operation.
Besides his wife, Karen, Jim’s mother, Marietta (photo), and his brother, Anthony, also worked there. His mother, who passed away on October 17, 2012, at age 83, was affectionately known as “Mom” to customers.
Waiting for a prescription at Lipkins often felt like sitting in a neighborhood living room. Patrons lined the chairs along the far wall, chatting with one another as Jim teased his relatives behind the counter. More than one newcomer was startled to hear him call out, “Mom, you’re not working fast enough,” only to realize moments later that it was all in good fun.
Lipkins had the warmth of an old‑time general store — all it lacked was a potbelly stove and a checkerboard. Once your prescription was ready, Jim made sure you understood how to take the medication and what side effects to watch for. He took that responsibility seriously.
One of the Last Independents
Lipkins was one of the last independent drugstores in South Jersey. The big chains — CVS, Rite Aid, and others — approached Jim numerous times about buying his business, but he refused. He and Karen worried about what would happen to their customers, many of whom relied on the personal attention only an independent pharmacist could provide.
A medical scare several years before the store closed forced Jim to cut back his hours. In May 2020, after 36 years of service, Jim and Karen closed Lipkins permanently. The couple celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on December 14, 2025.
Survivors include his wife, Karen, siblings Ron DiAmore, Anthony DiAmore, Diane DiAmore, and the late Marie Jennetta. Predeceased by his mother, Marietta, and his father, James.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jim’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of service, compassion, and community pride will continue to live on.
