Virtua Names Two Senior VP Physicians

Virtua Health, South Jersey’s largest health system, has appointed two accomplished physicians to senior vice president roles. Drs. Eric Sztejman and Sam Weiner will expand their leadership roles across the not-for-profit health system, while continuing to provide expert care to their patients.

Eric Sztejman, MDMMM, is now senior vice president of acute care services. In this role, he partners with clinical and administrative leaders to advance quality outcomes, strengthen operational performance, and support the ongoing expansion and evolution of acute care offerings across the health system.

A board-certified pulmonologist, critical care physician, and sleep medicine specialist, Dr. Sztejman has been with Virtua Health since 2006. His clinical interests have focused on caring for adults with complex respiratory and sleep-related conditions. Formerly a vice president of clinical operations, his leadership roles have included oversight of clinical operations across multiple specialty services and acute care facilities. He is widely recognized for his patient-centered approach and mentorship of new physicians.

In addition to his clinical and operational leadership, Dr. Sztejman has contributed to medical literature on topics such as pulmonary disease, sepsis, and pneumonia, reflecting his commitment to advancing care and improving outcomes. He is also passionate about community-focused and philanthropic efforts that support patients, families, and neighbors throughout South Jersey. Along with his family, Dr. Sztejman raises funds to support Virtua Health’s Thanksgiving turkey and produce giveaway each November.

Dr. Sztejman earned his medical degree from the Saba University School of Medicine and completed an internal medicine residency at the former Hahnemann University Hospital. He completed fellowship training in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine. In 2023, he earned a master of medical management degree from the Heinz College of Business at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa.

“During my career at Virtua, I’ve had the privilege of seeing our health system grow in both capability and capacity by expanding services, advancing clinical quality, and strengthening the continuity of care,” Dr. Sztejman said. “In my new role, I am committed to building on that progress by further establishing our hospitals as hubs of clinical excellence—where zero preventable harm is the standard and every patient experience reflects the compassion, safety, and quality our teams deliver every day.”

Sam Weiner, MD, MMM, chief medical officer for Virtua Medical Group (VMG), has been promoted to senior vice president of ambulatory services at VMG—Virtua Health’s network of employed clinicians. He will continue to lead the development and execution of the clinical vision for Virtua’s outpatient services. His focus is to advance Virtua’s mission, values, and strategic priorities across all 400-plus medical practices and care locations.

In this role, Dr. Weiner oversees clinical operations for VMG’s outpatient services and provides strategic leadership in quality, safety, regulatory readiness, and performance improvement. He is responsible for financial stewardship and operational performance across VMG, including optimizing care models, strengthening clinical productivity, improving value‑based contract outcomes, and driving total cost‑of‑care improvements.

Additionally, Dr. Weiner provides physician leadership and clinical oversight for employed practices, with a focus on quality, utilization, patient experience, and continuous improvement. He oversees clinician recruitment and practice acquisitions, supporting the growth and progression of VMG’s care delivery network. He also leads physician retention, wellness, and engagement strategies, fostering a culture of collaboration, professional development, and clinical excellence.

A board-certified family medicine physician, Dr. Weiner is highly regarded by his patients for his attentive, compassionate, and thorough approach to care.

Deeply engaged in community service, Dr. Weiner serves on the board of the Cherry Hill Free Clinic, supporting access to high-quality care for uninsured and underinsured individuals throughout the region. He was recently accepted into the prestigious Health Management Academy Physician Fellows Program and will complete the program in 2028.

Like Dr. Sztejman, Dr. Weiner holds a master’s degree in medical management from Carnegie Mellon. He completed his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.

Dr. Weiner considers it a privilege to advance Virtua’s mission across the outpatient setting: “In my role, I have the opportunity to shape a clinical vision that supports our values, strengthens our care teams, and ensures that every patient receives safe, compassionate, high‑quality care. Whether we are enhancing access, elevating performance, or innovating how we deliver services, my focus is on creating a unified ambulatory experience that reflects who we are as an organization and the community we proudly serve.”
