Officer Involved Shooting

The following information is preliminary and subject to change as the investigation continues.

On Friday, October 2, 2026, at approximately 2:46 p.m., officers assigned to the 15th District responded to reports of a male attempting to open doors in the rear of properties along the 4100 block of Tyson Avenue. Officer #1 and Officer #2 were in full uniform, each operating a marked police patrol vehicle.

Officer #1 spoke with a witness who provided a description of the male and reported seeing him try house, garage and vehicle doors. Officers subsequently located a male matching that description along Frankford Avenue.

Officer #2 exited his marked patrol vehicle and began pursuing the male on foot. Officer #1 drove north along Frankford Avenue as the male changed direction several times, moving between the street and sidewalk. Officer #1 then exited his marked patrol vehicle and joined the foot pursuit.

In the 7000 block of Frankford Avenue, Officer #1 caught up with the male and attempted to take hold of his arm. A physical struggle ensued, during which the male was holding a kitchen-style knife in his right hand. Officer #2 approached as the struggle continued.

A preliminary review of video evidence shows the male drawing back his right arm while holding the knife, with the blade pointed forward near shoulder height. Officer #1 attempted to create distance and fell backward in the driveway of a storage facility. The male briefly turned toward Officer #2, who backed away toward Frankford Avenue, before turning back and advancing toward Officer #1 with the knife as Officer #1 attempted to regain his footing.

Both officers discharged their service weapons, striking the male. The male was pronounced on location by responding PFD medics, and was later identified as Jamir Cave, 26/B/M.

Officer #1 sustained an elbow injury and was treated at Jefferson Torresdale Hospital. Officer #2 reported no injuries. A knife was recovered at the scene.

There were no other injuries reported by police or civilians.

Officer #1: P/O Thomas Catalano is a 12-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department and is assigned to the 15th District.

Officer #2: P/O Christian Nguyen is a 3-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department and is also assigned to the 15th District.

Both officers’ body-worn cameras captured footage of the incident; investigators also recovered surveillance video and interviewed multiple witnesses.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Philadelphia Police Department’s Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation Unit, the PPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau, and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. Per Department policy, both officers will be assigned to administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
