Woodbury Man Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison for Aggravated Assault

Woodbury, NJ – Jose Velez, 39, of Woodbury, was sentenced to 3 years in state  prison Friday for third-degree aggravated assault by the Honorable Kevin T. Smith,  pursuant to a plea agreement, Gloucester County Prosecutor Andrew B. Johns,  announced. 

According to documents filed in this case and statements made in open court: On November 27, 2025, a 43-year-old female victim reported to Woodbury Police  that Velez was outside of her residence and strangled her until she nearly passed  out. She reported that over the next few hours he assaulted her by kicking her “like  a soccer ball” and hitting her “like a punching bag.” 

Velez pled guilty to third-degree aggravated assault and violation of probation. He  was sentenced to 3 years in state prison to run concurrently with 365 days in state  prison for the probation charge. 

The State was represented by Chief Assistant Prosecutor Bryant Flowers and  Assistant Prosecutor Kylie Finley. 

Prosecutor Johns thanked the Woodbury Police Department for their assistance in  the investigation.
